Across five full-length albums since 2012, Chicago-based band Wei Zhongle have developed a strange brew of rhythmic mutant pop, melodic funk, and avant-prog rock. On their sixth, The Operators, the quartet continue to build frenetic, shape-shifting, trance-inducing grooves with fretless bass, electronic clarinet, drums, guitar, and voice. "It's becoming increasingly hard to stand out when seemingly everyone is embracing their weirder side," says Post-Trash, "but there's only one Wei Zhongle." The album sees release on Austin's Self Sabotage Records.
