Ecuador-born, Brooklyn-based musician Maria Usbeck writes buoyant synth-pop songs laced with humor, curiosity, and nostalgia, sung in a mix of English and Spanish. Following her solo debut in 2016 (after fronting the band Selebrities), she arrives at its follow-up, Envejeciendo, which translates to "aging." Songs explore the absurdity of existence—obsessing over youth, anticipating the future—marked by dreamy tropical dance production and abstract vocal samples, including artificial machine-speak and an interview with her late grandmother. "It's clear that Usbeck is still creating in a space that is very much her own," says Aquarium Drunkard. The record sees release on Cascine.
