The droning lullabies of New Zealand's Alicia Merz have quietly become a broken-folk treasure amongst ambient fans since her debut in 2011. The Death of Our Invention marks Merz's return after four years, presenting a fragile world held together by sparse instrumentation, field recordings, and her barely-there voice. Songs sway from melancholy to wonder. As Fluid Radio eloquently puts it, "Her otherworldly harmonies are both beautiful and fallen, lying in a gap somewhere between ecstasy and misery, between complete transparency and a dim, obscuring light, and halfway between the gutter and the stars." The album sees release on Denovali Records alongside repressings of her out-of-print back catalog.
