On their third full-length, and first for esteemed label Kranky Records (Grouper, Tim Hecker), New York City trio Forma synthesize two contrasting principles: spontaneity and control. Recorded over two days of studio jamming, and named after the philosophy that everything in the universe is determined, the album approaches Krautrock-inspired programming from a more physical, human vantage. Motorik beats and arpeggiated soundscapes meet acoustic instrumentation (piano, flute, percussion) in this expansive, 68-minute journey. Proving the "paradoxical notion," as Bandcamp Daily puts it, "that improvisation can exist inside a scripted machine."
