As the son of a Baptist pastor and gospel singing music, LA-based frontman TOLLIVER certainly takes a lot of influence from his religious background when composing his music. Filled with a grand and broad sense of atmosphere, the alt-RnB artist almost looks to contradict his own strict childhood as he releases his debut EP ‘RITES’, a collection that pays homage to late-night parties and anonymous sex.
The first single from the EP, ‘I Gotchu’ has received the remix treatment from Saturday, Monday – an acclaimed Swedish producer who has previously worked with the likes of Hayley Kiyoko and Steve Angello, receiving praise from Pitchfork, The Guardian, The Fader, Zane Lowe and Diplo. He tells us “What I love about the original track is that it is very ’visual’ and that the appeal lies in its form. So I knew that I didn’t want to just loop up a section and put some drums on it but rather try to expand the theme further having Tchaikovsky’s 'Swan Lake’ and Berry Jenkins’ film ’Moonlight’ in mind.”
From Tolliver’s perspective – “Saturday, Monday brought a powerful humanity and curiosity to my song about my estranged brother. The woodwinds, the tastefully done beat; it's a vision I didn't see coming but now can't live without.”
The original track documents the difficult family dynamic he has experienced over the years. Having not been close with his brother in recent times, his sibling went through a difficult divorce, allowing him time to rekindle his broken relationship and giving him the opportunity to build those broken bridges back up.
Coming across as hybrid of MNEK and The Weeknd, TOLLIVER’s music is all about embracing both the angel and devil in all of us. While his lyrics focus on a hedonistic lifestyle, filled with impulsive pleasures and rewards, he also reflects on the consequences of those decisions.
