San Francisco-based producer Avalon Emerson's "Warm Up Love" starts with a crack of splintering claps, tambourines and a teasing growl of a kick. It's an exercise in space and atmospherics with sampler-crunched Latin rhythms providing the base for a tapestry of wiggling horns, sparkling synthesizer flourishes, and echoing piano stabs. Emerson's education coming up in the all-night San Francisco warehouse scene becomes apparent through the track's unique mixture of Tom Tom Club-style pop appeal and deep-and-dirty Detroit beatdown aesthetics. The result is an infectious house cut whose grittiness paints a vivid picture of clandestine locales and wild abandon.
