This Side of Paradise

On their second album for Kompakt, Germany's Coma continue to take their moody electronic soundscapes deeper while punching up their pop profile. The lilting, '80s-inspired "Lora" soars in spite of its hushed vocals and muted sonics; "The Wind" refracts dancehall rhythms through jewel-toned keyboards beneath Brazilian singer Dillon's bright melodies. "Pinguin Power" pairs twinkly synths with hand percussion and airy falsetto, and "Poor Knight" plays warbling vocals off the album's most driving bass-and-drums groove. On "The Sea," coy vocal processing and tropical overtones make for a breezy highlight.
