Some words about the song:
The author of this description (Kenny) began writing this song while on a weekend trip to Washington, D.C. Years earlier I had attended a university there, where I would meet future Coral Gable Pat Brennan. This time I was in town to celebrate a different friend's graduation from law school. I was an underemployed freelancer and had been spending much time wondering what my efforts would lead to, if they would lead to anything at all, if there even was anything I could contribute to the world. It was in this condition that, alone, I wandered the streets of D.C., once familiar to me, with a melody in my head, some lines rattling around, and the weight of the past pressing down. A heavy load indeed.
The rhyme and meter were lifted from the Bob Dylan song "Mississippi." which has been stuck in my head ever since I first heard it and still has not left. Some of the lines explicitly reference lines in "Mississippi," too ("Time's piling up" and "Everybody moving"). One line ("You can always come back / But you can't come back all the way") seemed to speak directly to what I was experiencing as I walked the streets. There's a hypnotic, declarative quality to the meter that made it easy to come up with new lines for, so I ran with it. Listen to our song, please, but also listen to "Mississippi."
The vocals, rhythm guitar, drums, and bass were recorded live as a band. Additional guitars, percussion, harmonica, background vocals were added later as overdubs. Our friend Matt Riggle overdubbed the harmonica part. Later I would go on to pick up the harmonica myself for other recordings, but Matt helped render the vision for this one, and The Coral Gables hereby honor his contribution.
The "mansion named for a billionaire" line refers to The Phillips Collection. It's a good museum, I recommend visiting it to see some paintings, some famous, some not. I'm not sure if Mr. Phillips was actually a billionaire, but the word "billionaire" had more punch than the word "millionaire." I apologize to his ghost for my creative license. The Europeans and middle brow hacks were, however, completely real. There really is no way to escape the tyranny of the middle brow.
lyrics
I've been through the wringer
I've been through hell
I'm walking through a city
That I used to know well
Everybody's scrambling
They got places to go
Not me I'm weighed down
And I'm traveling slow
As time is pouring down
in sheets like rain
Over senators and presidents
And going down the drain
I turn into the alley
Been this way before
Been under that ladder
To go knocking on her door
There's something coiled up inside of me
Feels like it's gonna explode
I'm carrying a heavy heavy heavy load
I'm wandering the city
On a sunny day
Wondering why the streets are so wide
And the buildings so gray
All these politicians buzzing
Like bees in the hive
As I stand among them
Looking barely alive
As time is passing
Like a train going by
You can hear the whistle blowing
Through a crack in the sky
I'm doing what I can
Doing what I must
I'm serving my sentence
And the sentence was just
It's not an undue burden
I'm reaping what I sowed
I'm carrying a heavy heavy heavy load
Bought a ticket to a mansion
Named for a billionaire
The Europeans in the next room
Are putting on airs
There's no way to get away from
These middle brow hacks
They suck up all the oxygen
And they travel in packs
As time is billowing out
In thick plumes of steam
Filling in the middle distance
Between the world and a dream
Like the figure in a painting
In a sea of green
I've felt alone in the world
Since I was sixteen
And it's the same old story
Just in a different mode
I'm carrying a heavy heavy heavy load
I'm driving to the city
The one where I now live
Wondering if there's anything at all
To the world for me to give
Where everything is rotten
And limp to the touch
I tried living my life to the fullest
But it hasn't amounted to much
As time is blanketing
The earth like snow
Over prairies and the mountains
As a cold wind blows
Whatever happens happens
Whatever will be will be
I try to do unto others
As I would have them do unto me
And it's a new beginning
To a long hard road
I'm carrying a heavy heavy heavy load
