about

“Ya Lel Ma Atwalak” is a lullaby sung from the perspective of a woman alone at night, a lullaby sung from a mother to her adult son. In the song, she declares that it doesn’t matter how long she’ll be away from her parents, she already misses them, and will always miss them.

lyrics

Oh night, how long you are!
You made me walk barefoot
A balance, how heavy you are
You’ve exhausted my shoulders [I can't bear anymore]
My heart is tired for you
Oh mother, and the black hair which was left, turned grey
Oh mother, and the blonde hair which was left are gone
Oh mother, don't think that if our separation is long, we would forgot you
Oh mother, how if our separation is long, we will remember you
Camel driver, oh, camel driver
Camel driver, oh, my cousin
Take this salam [greeting] to my father and mother
Salam from my mind, talk from my mouth
Salam to my tender sister, who is far away from me
