lyrics

II. Stump The World

Despite his name,
Happy was a serious man.

He had been Happy since boyhood,
but had rarely been cheerful;

It was the feeling, not the name, that he had outgrown.

He was a smart old man
and a good old man;

He did not have much learning
but he had good taste;

What Happy had most of all was hunger.

Big and stout, very religious.
Happy passed the plate in church and chewed tobacco,

He wore suspenders and a belt
And he appreciated the safety in having both.

Happy had an orchard where he grew a freestone peach called stump the world.

His was the gait of a man
skilled and practiced in being intricately drunk.
There was a ponderous grace within Happy.
Like that of a trained elephant

Or a locomotive.

Happy was drunkenness become precise.

Happy stood up a great deal
He stood up and he kept quiet
until a greatness was perceived,
an overabundance of silence
that he could not stand.
And that…
That is what it took to kill a man like Happy,
That was his limit.
That was his mystery.

In St. Luke’s cemetery there is a huge old apple tree that drops a sprinkling of small, wormy, lopsided apples on the graves beneath it, and in the Woodrow Methodist cemetery there is a patch of wild strawberries.

The rain is falling slowly in large drops so that the circles it makes as it strikes the surface of the pool remain intact.

For a moment at the center of each circle the black branches of the trees are mirrored perfectly, and then distorted and fragmented as the circles interlink and subside and renew.

When I die they can sell privately the little that I leave, at a discount or without one.
My skin along with the rest.
It is not new;
it is not handsome;
it is not fine;
but still it will be good for some drum or rude tambourine.
