about

Mumble Tide return in 2024 with new single ‘The Rails’, out now via Breakfast Records

Their first release in a year, it saw the pair embrace a slower approach to the songwriting process, with composer Ryan Rogers drawing out the intimate depths of Leonard’s vocals and filing down production to its sharpest points.

While Mumble Tide have always dealt in maximalism, with strong melodies set atop a shimmering collage of sounds, 'The Rails' strikes in a subtly new direction. Working with producer Stew Jackson (Massive Attack), the band stripped Leonard's track to its bones, before gradually reconstructing parts around her voice.

Inspired by the free flowing rhythms of 60’s American folk, the aim was to find a balance between Roger’s vivid arrangements and Leonard’s evocative lyrics, one that truly captured the bittersweet depths of their songwriting.

lyrics

I got to be the
be the mean one
The one who threw it back
The one who grabbed the neck of the bottle
Poured it down the hatch
Could you taste the anger
Burning in my spit
Now I’m free of all of it
Now I’m free of all of it

I got to be the
be the worst one
The clock behind the bar
I’ll rip the dial off
Rewrite the way you read my palms
This is the first time
In my whole life
I’ll love myself to bits
Now I’m free of all of it
Now I’m free of all of it

I know there’s no one
But I bumped into someone
Blamed it on the moon
Who am I to call him crazy
Say it isn’t true
Maybe I should learn to wait
For things to come around
It spins full faced in my head
Please don’t be a stranger now
Don’t be a stranger now

I get so lost sometimes
In all my failures
Let me self off ‘cause I’m tryna make it up
Get so stuck sometimes
On all my mistakes
I get myself off sometimes
I’m back on the rails
Back on track

I’ll take the castle barely standing
Over the pile of bricks
Now I’m free of all it
