The album's title, taken from the Italian phrase "andare alla Deriva" ("to go adrift"), correlates with its lyrical themes, which vocalist Sean Worrell describes as "tragically searching for something that maybe isn't there...letting yourself go and becoming swayed by the unknown."
Three years in the making, "Derivae" was recorded, mixed and mastered using 100% analog and without use of any digital post-processing with Riccardo "Paso" Pasini at Studio73 (Ephel Duath, Void of Sleep).
Critical acclaim came pouring in for their 2013 Prosthetic debut, including a near-perfect review from Revolver (which described the band as the "gifted and talented love child of 'Leviathan'-era Mastodon and latter-day Death"). NERO DI MARTE has since continued to keep audiences in awe appearing on treks throughout Europe with acts including Godflesh, Carcass, Immolation, Cynic, Decapitated, Red Fang and Svart Crown, as well as completing their first ever North American jaunt last year supporting Gorguts and Origin.

What I like the most about this album is that it seems to be more riff-oriented and memorable compared to their earlier albums which were chock-full of crazy dissonant riffage but their songs often meandered or lacked any distinct progression. That is not to say that this this album is any less dense, but is certainly a little catchier, here and there. As always with Ulcerate, their music rewards repeated listening while clearly retaining the tragic, emotional feeling the band is known for.

Exactly what you'd expect the album between 'Vermis' and 'Stare...' to sound and feel like. In my opinion the most important step into the direction that would give us at least two works of pure emotional and oppressive genius in the following. Less suffocation and void than on 'Vermis' but still extremely unsettling and great as all of their work.

Dread, desolation and bleakness adding up to something I'd call a chaotic and nihilistic void if it'd make any sense. For me Vermis is the most difficult album to access by Ulcerate. Yet it's overwhelming and utterly oppressing.
