about

Circle Cast Around - “Circle Cast Around” pays homage to the sacred nature of the circle - a timeless symbol of unity without beginning or end. Magic and rituals are often performed within the circle, where ethereal forces can be harnessed and channeled - their directions and elements being: North/Earth, East/Air, South/Fire, and West/Water.

Having produced iconic records for Cocteau Twins and Depeche Mode, we enlisted the help of John Fryer, founding member of the goth band This Mortal Coil for mixing and production ideas. Guest musician Mike Squires, formerly with Peter Hook of Joy Division, contributed his expertise by playing the distinctive bass line that cycles throughout.

We selected “Circle Cast Around” as the opening track to “Festival of Invocations" to serve as an invitation to step inside the round for a mystical, immersive journey with us. The song emerged from Karyn's haunting riff on the shahi baaja (an Indian instrument which we fondly call “the baaj”). The idea had been saved as a simple iphone recording a couple years earlier, before it was rediscovered again, and we felt inspired to begin working out an arrangement. With Joe layering the root chords beneath on an acoustic guitar - later replaced by a bass, a mesmerizing interplay unfolded akin to a circle within a circle. This musical synergy evokes a trance-like atmosphere, reminiscent of Joy Division and The Cure, adding depth to the song's mystical allure.

lyrics

Lyrics:
No end is found
The circle is cast around
Join hands, with closed eyes
Romance the old and wise
The ring surrounds
The end was never found
The circle is cast around
The east, the south, the west, the north
Above, below and the center
No end, no end, circle no end
