À côté de Heavy As A Really Heavy Thing, City, désormais véritable groupe, est plus raffiné — parce que Strapping Young Lad veut viser le raffinement de cruauté. Bien sûr, impossible de ne pas mentionner la performance vocale de Devin Townsend qui ajoute à son chant hurlé du screeching articulé effréné ainsi que des chœurs. Mais Jed Simon ajoute une dose de violence supplémentaire avec des riffs qui rendraient jaloux les pointures du black metal et Gene Hoglan est une machine ! Un chef-d'œuvre !

Alien porte bien son nom : un corps étranger s'introduit dans le quatrième album de Strapping Young Lad — celui de Devin Townsend lui-même (je parle du groupe). Si les synthés ont toujours eu droit à une place dans le thrash metal industriel furieux, ici ils prennent une envergure plus grandiose, pompeuse voire carrément clownesque, surtout quand le xylophone s'en mêle. Le cirque qu'est cet album, c'est celui de notre propre vie : nous en sommes les marionnettes, nous en sommes les marionnettes.

Hidden History of the Human Race

An excellent release that significantly improved from their previous albums. Blood Incantation's Hidden History of the Human Race sounds like Covenant-era Morbid Angel, Death, Brutality, Afterbirth, Lykathea Aflame, Atheist, and Cynic had a child. I really enjoy Blood Incantation's lyrical themes, while their name would make one presume they're about the occult or played-out satanic crap, they take a deep dive into the unknown of the cosmos and extraterrestrial beings. Excellent work!
