“Vinternes Vinde” meaning Winter winds, was written in the winter of 2022, when I lived in Iceland. I was very unhappy about the choice I had made about moving there all alone. I thought I was going to have the time of my life and had dreamed about living in Iceland since I saw the music video to "Perth" by Bon Iver when I was 12 years old. It seemed like the stars had aligned when I got into Iceland University of the arts, but the school was a huge disappointment. Another international student and I ended up in a big draining conflict with the school that took all my energy. I had never felt more alone in my life. Besides that, it was also the hardest winter they had for many years, with a meter of snow and a storm once a week.
It was in great contrast to the life I came home to in Denmark during the school breaks, where I was surrounded by friends and family and there was nothing that was hard. The last months I was in Iceland were pure survival and the only thing that kept me up was the thought of coming back to Denmark for the summer and being surrounded by people I love, and this is what the song is about :)
Recently the song started to have even more meaning to me:
When I was practising the song for a concert in Portugal, I almost cried, because this suddenly also had a meaning according to my new life here in Budapest.
When I was being exchanged to Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest I thought that I was probably just moving my problems to another country. In some way, it felt like I had been tested by the “gods” with the year I had in Iceland because everything just worked out in Budapest and I have never been happier. People here are so supportive and are lifting each other up, and it reminds me of this verse I wrote a year ago:
