Like many of the recent songs Dean and Lex have composed together, "The List" has gone through a few iterations. Lex initially wrote "The List" in the summer of 2022 as a power ballad, with more of a rock energy. But as it goes with composing, the duo is always looking for the best arrangement to suit the song and Lex's voice.
In July 2022 Dean added the Manikin Memotron to his repertoire of sound and its the Memotron that gives the soothing rolling bass you hear from the top. Let it be known that all four songs on the this is not new york EP were produced by Dean and recorded in the attic at Dean and Lex's apartment in Portland.
Perhaps a sister song to "Richard Prince", "The List" is inspired by the four years Lex spent living in New York in her early twenties.
"Being a young person, or being a person of any age, it can be confusing to understand one's sexuality. Society does not encourage women to claim our sexuality, to delight in it, to not feel shame about being in one's body. Maybe this has changed a little bit in recent years, but when I was in my early twenties I felt so confused and ashamed sometimes as I began to discover myself, and as the years went on, accept myself.
It was a thing, tell me who hasn't done this, to write the list...I feel that claiming one's story helps one take responsibility for oneself and may lead to greater self acceptance. Which in turn can lead to a greater practice of loving. Do I want to burn up the list? Or do I actually have love for everyone, even those who have hurt me?"
