Armstrong’s voice reminds me of Sugar and track one fits comfortably in that realm, but there's more to this band than throwback. Prolific bandmate Davis compliments with performances and songwriting that differ enough to elevate the sound without creating contrast that disrupts the continuity of so many great records with two strong writers. As usual, strong production from Purcell rides a line between reverence and experimentation for an easy listen that never seems stale or unchallenging.
