Drawing influence from country and folk icons like Marty Robbins, Elizabeth Cotten and Norma Tanega, “Cowboy Blues” is a classic country ballad that, on its surface, tells the tale of a cowboy whose lover is taken from him by a stranger who comes to town and steals his identity. At its core, the song digs at the deeper issues of the fear of being left behind while friends find success, and the indecisive struggle between the two sides of oneself that is so familiar to Geminis. The two cowboys in the story evoke the Gemini symbol of twins, and the constant shifting between confidence and insecurity so intrinsic to the sign.
