1UP (featuring Timothian)

about

For the last year or so we've been working intermittently on a postal service type collaboration with eleven-year-old electronic musician, Timothian. We met him a few years back when he and his family attended a festival we were playing and we've crossed paths a handful of wonderful times since then. From the first time we heard Timothian's creations, we dreamed of teaming up and now it's happened!
Last fall he sent us a handful of tracks he was working on. We divvied them up between ourselves according to which ones most inspired us individually. The one he'd entitled 1UP immediately struck a chord with Lauren, and while we imagine he was referring to the video game usage of the term "1UP" (game speak for gaining an "extra life"), she took it in the direction of one-upmanship, contemplating how dangerous comparison can be to the creative process. We recorded the vocals in our studio, Daniel tracked some super fun electric guitars, and we sent it all back to Tim for his final approval. The song was mixed and mastered by Jeff Stuart Saltzman in Portland, OR. Artwork was a collaboration between Lauren and Tim.
What a joy it was working on this song and communicating with Tim and his family in the process. We hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed making!

lyrics

Everytime
Everytime I find something good
Man you gotta one up me
Everytime
Everytime I'm feeling like gold
You gotta one up me

Why

It ain't a crime
It ain't a climb
I'm not trying to win nothing
but you always one up me
You go your way
I go mine
But no matter where we land
you're always back to one up me

Why

I just want my own thing
Leave me all alone thing
You can be your own king
I just want my own thing

I was blinded
I've got blinders now
Make your big show
Cause your glow doesn't touch me
Doing time
Making mine and I really don't care
if you gotta one up me
And I really don't care if you gotta one up me

Why
