Product description
Following up his crossover-ridden return from retirement KINGDOM COME, Jay-Z presents a concept album, AMERICAN GANGSTER, inspired by the Ridley Scott movie of the same name. Contentwise, Jay is in his element, spinning street corner imagery and tales of the drug trade in the same spirit as the film, while, on the production end, 1970s R&B and soul samples dominate. The production team of Diddy, LV, and Sean C accounts for much of the record's cohesion, providing six beats built on loops from the likes of Marvin Gaye, Barry White, and Rudy Love & the Love Family. Jigga finds plenty room to get jiggy on tracks like "Roc Boys (And the Winner Is)," "Party Life," and "I Know," a Neptunes-produced gem that sounds like a tricked-out "It Ain't Hard to Tell." Undoubtedly Jay's tightest effort since 2001's THE BLUEPRINT, AMERICAN GANGSTER features a few choice guest verses from Lil Wayne, Beanie Siegel, and Nas.

An unofficial musical companion to the film of the same name (dir. Ridley Scott), American Gangster traces the rise and fall of a self-made American man. Sound tired? Perhaps, but a dozen albums into his career, Jay-Z can be forgiven his occasional dabbling in shopworn archetypes. A panoramic, cinematic work in four acts, American Gangster bulges with instrumental melodrama. Take "American Dreamin'": despite the Diddy-produced track's sultry, shifty beat, a pile of whining strings and tinkling piano flourishes all but completely suppresses the rhythmic interplay between the vocals and drums. Again and again, Jay-Z's otherwise compelling raps fall prey to a similarly overwrought studio aesthetic. (In this, the album resembles many a Ridley Scott film.) There are exceptions: Bigg D's "Hello Brooklyn 2.0" and the Neptunes' "I Know" and lead single "Blue Magic" are unqualified bangers, and Jermaine Dupri's "Success" (featuring Nas) flaunts a relentless organ lick with 'round-the-way mojo to spare, but the album's overriding sonic melodrama is all Diddy. Still, no one steals Jay-Z's thunder easily. Having long since joined the top ranks of the hip-hop elite, Jay-Z can (and does) ultimately weather the best efforts of another major-league ego and still come out on top. --Jason Kirk

- Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2013I've never written a Jay-Z album review on this site, why? I always thought i would be biased because i'm a big fan. But, I just played this album again and I was like, maybe I should write a review for this one.
This is HOV in a more mature mind state. You like Reasonable Doubt? fine. This is Reasonable doubt, with better focus, mature outlook, better flow and presentation. This album is a classic. Yes, i said it. I hate calling albums classic, but this is it. "American Dreamin" is one of the best hiphop songs all time. Right up there with "Nas Is Like" and "Ghetto Prisoners". (By the Way, to me? I AM is Nas best work, but lets get back to topic.) American Dreamin is the epitome of narration from a hustler's point of view and how he navigated the waters of struggle, trying to make a living. Not to talk of that, the track is riddled with wordplay to keep you entertained. He's not saying he's a saint either, he needs help too "I need a personal Jesus, I'm in Depeche Mode"..(of course, he's referencing Depeche mode's track but this is the kind of thing jay-z does, this is why NOBODY does wordplay quite like Jay-Z does.).
Now Jay being my favourite rapper, i dont like saying he's the best.(Maybe not now lol) The list is huge. Let's leave it at that. This album will take you on a ride, its like a movie, with breaks in between ('ignorant shhhht'). Its a hustler's tale. The album is done without regard for what is on the radio, but he just wanted to do what he does without pressure (I mean he owns his music now doesn't he?). Jay-Z makes complexity look simple lyrically, if you are not paying attention, you'd think he's rapping for the sake of it. Sorry to disappoint you, dude is a lyrical genius, and well read too, thats for everybody thats saying he's ignorant. You think he'd be where he is if he was? use your brain. I could've lived without Lil Wayne on this album, but its ok. Its one track.
By the time you get to 'success' you would already understand why this is one of the highlights of the album. Its a celebration of success the only way two titans can tell it. Great storytelling, great overall flow. Its a masterpiece, mainly because Jay-Z did this his way.
Bottom line, if you like hiphop, you'd like this album. IF you like Jay-Z then you already know. Period.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2024Say hello is my song of the week easily.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2007Jay-Z drops a smash on us. While i enjoyed "Kingdom Come" personally. I was hoping after hearing about this new release that Jay would bring it back and let all those out there know that he hasn't lost it. If anything he's stepped the game and raised the bar up more than a bit for all those coming after.
With some interesting samples like "New Earth" by Hank Marvin on the "Pray" track, "Make The Road by Walking" by The Menahan Street Band" on "Roc Boys (And The Winner is) and "The Love We Share Is The Greatest of Them All" by Tom Brock on "Say Hello". Also incorporating parts from the American Gangster movie as well adds little movie concept into the whole cd itself.
Some of the tracks that are repeat worthy:
"Pray"
"Hello Brooklyn 2.0" feat Lil Wayne
"Roc Boys (And the Winner Is).."
"Ignorant Sh.." feat Beanie Sigel
"Success" feat Nas
"Fallin" (w/backing vocals by Bilal)
other noteworthy tracks:
"Blue Magic"
"American Gangster"
"I Know"
"No Hook"
American Gangster is an album that fans of Jay-Z will no doubt identify with and will more than likely draw many more people to an artist that knows the meaning of longevity and success and he continues to be at the forefront in the rap game with no signs of slowing down.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 12, 2007Jay-Z did it again with this album. I spent all weekend replaying my favorite tracks ("Roc..." & "I Know").
What good artists and rappers do well is make sure they cater to a wider variety of artists. As most can tell by my name, "ms_ladi", I appreciate the fact that Jay-Z caters to the ladies (to a degree). Obviously the tracks are good or they wouldn't have been on the album...and that's a fact. Jay-Z released a hit album. I would have NEVER looked twice at Lil' Wayne if I hadn't heard "Hello Brooklyn". I'm not a "Dirty South" rap fan or what have you. Not really a fan of too many rappers with "Lil'" in their names. I'm also not a rap fan that gets so deep in lyrics and deep bass. I need something to nod my head to while I'm commuting to work or in the gym. "No Hook" is not for cardio. Just remember, not all rap fans walk around wearing huge head phones taking apart lyrics and pulling up their pants. I like good music, and this here: IT.
The other tracks are also great and has great lyrics. A winner and thumbs up!

- Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2007After returning with Kingdom Come last year, Jay-Z is back with American Gangster - his first conceptual album. Many people doubted Jigga but he proved once again why he's one of the greatest mc's off all-time and a future hall of famer.
The album is a banger from start to finish with one exception: Hello Brooklyn. The only problem with the song is the presence of wack azz Lil Wayne on it...the beat is kinda strange in the beggining but it grows after a few spins, Jay's flow is sickness, his rhymes r on point but wack azz Lil Wayne totally ruined the song with that wack azz chorus...I mean he lives in New Orleans what the hell he knows 'bout Brooklyn? Jay made a big mistake on this one.
Beside this, the rest of the album is spectacular. The production is brilliant, I gotta admit I was skeptical when I read than Diddy was producing the majority of the songs but Thank God he didn't make it by himself...No ID, Neptunes, JD all of them did a exceptional job on it.
So the result is nothing less than album of the year for Jigga...too many people praising that disapointed Kanye West's "Graduation" didn't realise that Jay took it this year.
Go buy it!!Don't waste your time!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Some great songs like Fallin
because this was a concept album it went under the radar, not really about American Gangster the film. Its about a younger and older drug dealer, highly under rated album.
Some great songs like Fallin, american dream, ignorant S**t. wonderful album with some great beat and an excellent samples

5.0 out of 5 stars RUNNIN GAME ON THE UNSANE
Fully agree With D. Ayeni's comments. Great LP and "Say Hello" has some of the sharpest comment since "La Femme Fetal" by Digable Planets or "Hand of the Dead Body" by Scarface not to mention "Mind Playin Tricks on M" by Geto Boys (will never be surpassed in my humble opinion!) First LP from Jay-Z I've bought or listened to altho my younger brother has been a big fan for longtime. I should have listened to him and paid attention b4!
