Editorial Reviews

After creating one of the most original and infectious songs of last year with "Vans", a song that even Rolling Stone named top 5 for 2006, these four Bay Area teens are set to take it one step further with their debut album BASED BOYS. BASED BOYS is 17 tracks of body moving rhythms produced mostly by in house production whiz - Young L. The album also features production from Mr. Collipark (Ying Yang Twins, Bubba Sparxx), DJ Speedy (Young Jeezy) and Pit (Shop Boys - "Party Like a Rockstar"). The first single "In My Car" picks up right where "Vans" left off with the video will be directed by MTV VMA nominated Dale "Rage" Resteghini (Souljia Boy, Jim Jones, Young Berg)

BASED BOYS is a album that went above all expectations for me. I bought their EP and thought it was tight but there was only like 7 songs on it. This album is filled with plenty of bass and hyphy music. Tight as hell if you like E-40 or Keak.

I'm not sure exactly when it happened, but MTV2's video show Sucker Free went from showcasing some of the most overlooked rappers to showing some of the wackest rappers. One group that drove this point home was The Pack, who in late 2006 released the product placement song "Vans". For some reason I decided to listen to their EP Skateboards 2 Scrapers, and not only was it bad, but it was uninteresting the way the foursome was trying to re-usher in the concept of skateboarding rappers (or was there EVER such a concept?). That fad didn't catch on, which is possibly why they don't go that route for their first full-length album, Based Boys.

But this album isn't better than Skateboards 2 Scrapers; it's worse. Most of these songs have to have some of the most effortless choruses in the world: take your pick from "I Look Good", "Fly" or "In My Car" (and the latter is too wack for words). And although the first verse of "Rumble" (the only reason for the extra half-star) is fine, the song starts going downhill after THAT chorus as well.

Another failure is the presence of club songs that don't go anywhere, and there're three of them in a row with repetitive titles: "In the Club" followed by "Club Stuntin'" followed by "At the Club". And although "My Girl Gotta Girl Too" isn't as disgusting as I expected, it still sucks. Speaking of that, sexual songs also fail, as evidenced by "Backseat", "Booty Bounce Bopper", or "The Milky Way" and its remix. And the obligatory song for the ladies, "Rock N Roll" (which uses a sped-up sample of Freddie Jackson's "Rock Me Tonight" as its backdrop), has such a redundant chorus that it really had me reaching for the fast-forward button.

Actually, the whole album will make you do that. And the end of the album contains four bonus tracks. One is the aforementioned remix of "The Milky Way", but the others are three songs that already appeared on Skateboards 2 Scrapers ("Candy", "I'm Shinin'" and "Vans"). Like we really needed to be reminded of those songs??? Anyway, it's no big surprise that the Pack got dropped from BMG after sales of this album because the only thing these boys are based on is wackness.
