It's no small feat to follow an instant classic like Common's Be (2005) but he skillfully builds on that success with a worthy sequel. The two albums share much in common, especially with Finding Forever's focus and brevity (under 50 minutes) and especially with Kanye West's musical direction. The two Chicago natives have forged a strong chemistry together, especially on songs like "Start the Show" and "Southside" where both men appear, but just as a producer, West makes his presence felt on everything from the catchy piano tinkles of "Driving Me Wild" (featuring British chanteuse Lily Allen) to the brass-knuckled "The Game" (featuring DJ Premier). As has become his trademark, Common balances heartfelt earnestness ("Black Maybe") with clever charm ("Break My Heart") though he has one too many love songs ("I Want You"). Whether Finding Forever surpasses Be is a matter of individual, song-for-song taste: At worst, it's on par--a laudable accomplishment for a veteran now 15 years into his career. --Oliver Wang

- Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2007I admit it has been more than awhile since i've bought a Common cd. Not sure of the last one, but i do know one thing. I will be getting his other cds that he's released very soon. Listening to "Finding Forever" made me remember what i loved about hip hop in geneal MCs with a tight flow, meaningful lyrics and rapping about worthwhile things. I can't really rate this cd compared to his recent ones since i dont have those as of yet.
But i do know that this cd will get much play from me and i'm sure others will get in on this as well. Even after 15 years in the game, Common still hasnt lost his love for hip hop in the least. Hmmm, pick a song that hit me more than any other that would have to be "Forever Begins". I don't know it just does something for me that makes me think about the song long after it has stopped playing. I believe that is the goal of a song to have you thinking/debating on it way after.
I enjoyed other tracks on the cd as well a lot. Like "Start the Show", "The People", "U, Black Maybe", "So Far To Go" with D'angelo (love his music) and "Southside" with Kanye.
Others that will get plenty of play as well:
"I Want You" w/will.i.am
"The Game"
"Break My Heart"
"Misunderstood"
In the realm of rappers trying to be hard and having nothing but disrespect for women out there. It's really heartening to see Common come along and kick that trend to the side and give the respect as it is due.
"Finding Forever" i hope that it finds its way into many people's CD collections.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2007You can always expect something diverse from Common. "Finding Forever" isn't quite on the level of "Be", which I thought was his best work to date. But it's a real solid disc just the same. The intro to the record is soothing. The strongest tracks in my opinion are (7),(3),(12),(8),(9),(11),(4),(2). The (2) track "Start the Show" is an excellent song which mentions Noble Drew Ali. It's a rarity that an M.C. mentions one of our icons. The third cut "The People" is an excellent song as well and what people call conscious rap. The 4th song "Drivin me Wild" is the radio friendly joint, dropped right out the gate. I didn't feel it at first but after I heard it a few more times, I began to like it, more & more.
Southside which is the 6th track features Kanye West. I can feel Kanye on his own records, but for some reason not the collabos, especially this one. The seventh selection "The Game" is the strongest track. You could tell right away the legendary Primo is involved. The lyrics & beats to this song are top shelf. The 8th song "U Black Maybe" is mellow & insightful, sounds like old school Coonga drums were utilized toward the end. In the 9th selection "So far to go' Di Angelo makes a comeback of sorts. This song has an old school feel synthesizers and all. Number eleven "Misunderstood" is a very good song though on the hauntingly melancholy side. Twelve "Foreever begins" is another thought provoking & inspiring song, with Common's Pop's closing it out. Common's an M.C. that has something to say and a positive vibe to feel in his music. With Pharoahe Mounch, and Talib Kweli dropping CD'S around the same time not to forget Public Enemy as well, Hip Hop might be ready for a revival.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2007You read reviews to find out what other people think about a album that you're undecided about. So here goes:
I'm a 32 year old husband and father of two, and I was born and raised in the Bronx. Self-explanatory, I was born with hip-hop. Though I still breathe hip-hop, lyrically and content wise, it doesn't resonate personally unless you're hustling in the trap or you're a pimp. I'm neither. FINDING FOREVER is as intelligent an album you're going to hear this year.
It's the ultimate rap album. Insane beats, with real world statements.(No shoulder leaning, two stepping or shuckin' and jivin')
It's the reason you loved A Tribe Called Quest or Public Enemy.
If you love hip-hop, buy it.
If you love neo-soul, buy it.
If you love beats to bang in your car, buy it.
It's the best rap album you will hear this year, I promise you. If you think I'm wrong. Post a response and tell me so.
How a man 15 years in the game does an album like this is incredible. Common's musical and lyrical maturity should embarrass cats like Jay-Z and LL Cool J, who know better, and put out subpar material anyway.
I wish I could give this album 8 stars.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 11, 2007After "Be" Common is back in '07 with "Finding Forever" once again executive-produced by Kanye West.
The result? One of the best albuns of the year. Their chemistry is evident and even with beats from other producers like Will I. Am and the late J. Dilla Common brings his A game to the table and shows why he's one of the mos prolific mc's in the game...
My favourite track is "The Game"...that boom-bap beat u can swear was made by DJ Premier who contributed with his sharpest scratches.
It's a great album but I still don't know if it's better than "Be" but certainly "FF" is one of Common's best albuns to date.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just too cool for school!
It is like an excitable plane take off from track two onwards. For me hearing this album is lyrical passion in its wisest sense coupled with romantic the flirtation around hard hitting words. It is elite in a market where WE have lost our way and will forever remain supreme. Great rhythm, some harsh lyrics (better at drug dealing) ha ha!, a touch of love (I want you) accompanied by its excellent heartfelt video, directed by Kerry (good one girlie). My fave tracks? U Black Maybe, I Want You, Start The Show, The People.......ALL OF THEM!!!
As for Common giving us this album, I will say that well after a decade in the business this offering is 8/10.....which means I want more, but am forever grateful for anything from this artist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Common "Finding Forever" - das bessere Kanye Album?
2. "Let's Start the Show": Tighter Track, einfach ein guter Opener, Kanye hat alles richtig gemacht, sowohl der Beat ist O.K. als auch seine Hook kann man so stehen lass.
3. "The People" gefällt mir inhaltlich gut: Dass Common jeden Part gleich anfängt find ich stilistisch gut gemacht und die Zeile "My daughter found Nemo, I found the new premo" gefällt mir.
Sehr, sehr tight! Einer meiner Favs auf dem Album.
5. "I Want You": will.i.am ist ein guter Producer, und sehr gefragt, trotzdem find ich den Track - kurz gesagt - auf Dauer etwas langweilig, obwohl die Synthies, oder was ich da während der Hook raushören kann, nett arrangiert sind.
"I want big cribs and my man Ronnie to get his
Child in a good school and know what her gift is
It's global warming, the world is shifting
Watching Sweet Sixteen, Bithin-ass rich kids
You know, I know I gotta go the distance
Whether yoga or doja, we all get lifted in the game."
11. "So Far To Go" ist ein schöner Track - wenn man sein Mädl im Arm hat. Alles richtig gemacht, sehr kuschlig;-)
12. "Break My Heart" gefällt mir genauso gut wie "Drivin' Me Wild". Begeistert mich Restlos.
13. Dieses "Missunderstood" ist schon ein rechter Ohrwurm ... Oh Lord, please don't let me be missunterstood" ... Perfekte Production!
Peace.

5.0 out of 5 stars
