St Vincent is singer-composer-multi-instrumentalist Annie Clark, ably assisted by some of her friends on strings, horns, reeds, and vocal choir. Clark is a find, refreshingly different. She has a lovely, pure voice, which, though not strong, is always there for her quirky compositions and lyrics. She writes strong songs: they take unpredictable turns, changing direction both melodically and rhythmically en route to satisfying resolutions. The lyrics are tricky things. I especially like "Landmines," which begins with: "I'm crawling through landmines/Just to know what you are." It's a love song of sorts, I guess, but more than that, she manages to combiner playfulness with wistfulness in one lovely five-minute piece. I am equally impressed by "Now Now," which starts with a vocal choir singing "I know" and Annie Clark filling in what she knows -or rather remembers--from a shared past in a surrealist stream of consciousness. The song splinters at the close into a burst of sound much like in the Beatles' "A Day in the Life." And then it ends. Just ends. Which is one of Annie Clark's trademarks, songs that end sometimes, as in the lovely "All My Stars Aligned," suddenly and unexpectedly. They're just over. Because she's said what she has wanted to say, no more left to listen to. Other favorites? "Paris Is Burning," "What Me Worry," "Marry Me," and the kickass "Your Lips Are Red," which is driven by Clark's driving electrified guitar riffs. I like also that she includes a short piano piece, "We Put a Pearl in the Ground," eight songs in (out of eleven total). That's nine songs out of eleven that like greatly and the other two aren't bad either. It sounds like a good argument for buying or downloading the whole album and not just a few cuts. Clark doesn't sound like either Regina Spektor or Natalie Feist, but the listener who enjoys either of them will probably enjoy listening to Annie Clark too.

Watch out for St. Vincent, or Annie Clark, whatever she chooses to call herself in the future. She's a comer.

This wonderful debut starts off with three songs ("Now Now," "Jesus Saves, I Spend," and "Your Lips Are Red") that one might describe as alternative pop: quirky, sometimes edgy, with lots of instruments (various guitars, some quite distorted, keys, violin, bass, drums) that add texture yet manage to maintain lots of space. These qualities are only accentuated by the songs' live performances, in which St. Vincent, a/k/a Annie Clark, utilizes robotic movements (I saw her in NYC last night). But while this may all sound cold, it is far from that; rather, there is something that is intense and uplifting. As if to make the latter point, the CD moves on to its fourth song, "Marry Me," a jazz/pop, upbeat ballad. The rest of the CD is a mixture of what might be described as Fiona Appleesque, alternative jazz ("Paris Is Burning"), a country-like ballad ("All My Stars Aligned"), more alternative pop ("Apocalypse Song"), a moving instrumental ("We Put A Pearl In The Ground"), jazzy ballads ("Landmines," and "What We Worry"), and upbeat jazz ("Human Racing").

The music is complex and varied, the lyrics intelligent. The songs are instantly memorable -- a pretty rare quality!

    Oh, and did I mention Annie's voice -- Saint-like!

This album is my instant new favorite. All of the songs are like little scenes that play out in my head when I hear them. Her lyrics are smart and funny. Her voice is wonderful. And she uses all of her instruments (and voice) in clever ways...shows just how talented she is. I love how her voice just sort of calmly floats through the songs, which are often rather complex and energetic rhythms and melodies. Sometimes her voice is almost hip hopping through the song (without at all taking on a rap persona).

The weird part for me is that after decades of buying records and CD's, this "album" is one of the first download-only purchases I have ever made. I MISS looking through art work, reading lyrics, and wondering who all of those people are that are being credited and thanked in the notes. iPods and Clouds are cool concepts but mp3's SUCK. I guess I'm just an old fart.

    :)

Great album. Clark is a true songwriter. Her compositions are original and entertaining. This is what modern popular music should be.

The best St. Vincent for me is still her eponymous album, but this is way up there with "Masseduction" and "Daddy's Home" - both easier listens, but here she lays out her interest in sonic layers and unexpected turns. A great, great album.

Really awesome. Among my favorite albums that I discovered in the memorable past. Every tune is above average in quality with the exception of We Put A Pearl In The Ground which is alright. The entire remaining song list is superb. A must own for fans seeking something that could maybe fill the gap Bowie left with blending classical, jazz, electronic, and rock into brilliant "gumbos" from track to track.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review of all five St Vincent albums
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 14, 2020
Okay, so this is a quick review of all five main albums Annie Clark has released to date. I would suggest she is the most important popular musician of the decade whose work we’ll still be listening to in 100 years.
Her debut ‘Marry Me’ already has many of the characteristics that single out her work. Whatever disgusting (male) trolls say online she is a great guitarist with an immediately recognisable personal style. She writes complex songs that sound deceptively simple. In under 5 minutes (in all her albums there are only two songs that go over 5 minutes) she can switch effortlessly from a spiky prog fuzz sound to a truly gorgeous melody, the equal of any of the great songwriters of any generation. I think of ‘Marry Me’ as her ‘jazz’ album, with influences from her early career in her uncle’s band and the Polyphonic Spree.
‘Actor’ has classical influences and both
already include many references to films either in the lyrics (‘Is Paris Burning?’, Rohmer’s ‘Love in the Afternoon’) or the music (she’s obviously a John Barry fan).
For me ‘Strange Mercy’ doesn’t make the same quantum leap forward that her other albums do. It’s still brilliant though.
‘St Vincent’ marks a new maturity of confidence and assertiveness both musically and lyrically. It’s themes are broader and more ‘political’.
‘Masseduction’ is simply a masterpiece of subversive pop at least the equal of Clark’s hero David Bowie. It’s almost unique in having at least two tracks on it that make me want to dance and another two that make me cry.
Coupled with Clark’s sensational performances and videos she epitomises the future of progressive music it’s widest sense.
Clark is the subversive face of modern feminism, a genius and an icon.
