About Us

Merge Records was started in the summer of 1989 by Laura Ballance & Mac McCaughan, the same summer they formed the band Superchunk in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The first couple of Merge releases were cassettes (remember those?) by Wwax and Bricks, followed by the first Superchunk (then known only as "Chunk") 7-inch single.

The 7-inch was the format of choice during the first three years of the label, with cash borrowed from friends to finance projects (including singles from Erectus Monotone, Angels of Epistemology, and more Superchunk). Various bedrooms served as Merge HQ until 1992, when the first Merge full-length release, Tossing Seeds by Superchunk, was released on CD, LP, and cassette. Starting that year, Merge moved from one charming-yet-run-down office to another until 2001, when we finally made the move from Chapel Hill down the road to a fine old building all our own in historic downtown Durham, NC.

Product Description

This record starts with "Don't Make Me a Target", a song that builds on Spoon's familiar minimal rhythmic piano/guitar vamp popularized on earlier hits like "Small Stakes" or "The Way We Get By". The album quickly moves into uncharted territory with the atmospheric "The Ghost in You Lingers" and moves through several different stylistic changes from the explosive "You Got Yr Cherry Bomb" to the wall-of-sound horns of radio single "The Underdog". Their most heartfelt batch of songs since 2001's GIRLS CAN TELL.

Something happened to Spoon between records five and six--they got big. It's not as if these unprepossessing Texans were unpopular before, but after Gimme Fiction, their music was everywhere. There was Britt Daniel, who has since moved to Oregon, singing karaoke on cult favorite Veronica Mars, there was his soundtrack for deadpan Will Ferrell vehicle Stranger Than Fiction, and then there were the countless times their tunes, especially 2002's "The Way We Get By," appeared in other movies and TV shows. The irony is that they hadn't signed to a major label (they tried that in the 1990s; it didn't take). Nor had they given their sound a major overhaul. Maybe it was a change of publicist, or maybe the times had simply caught up with these "faux punks/gentlemen dudes." In any case, Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga is the mark of men confident enough to give their album one of the world's goofiest titles (at least it's an improvement over Queen's "Radio Ga Ga"). If Gimme Fiction was a transitional work, record number six moves even further away from the angularity of Wire and other early influences. "The Ghost of You Lingers," for instance, is downright dreamy, while "You Got Yr. Cherry Bomb" is brass-bedecked power-pop (with chimes!). Open-minded listeners will surely find this Beatlesque song cycle irresistible. Fans of the Spoon's darker, more dramatic material might want to check their expectations at the door. They'll be glad they did. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Spoon is just one of the best rock bands ever and can do no wrong in my opinion.
Buy as much Spoon music as you can! You will not regret it!!!!

There is a reason they are called "demos." The fully-realized songs, however, are excellent compositionally, musicianship, lyrically; philosophically. What really has me riveted by Spoon, however, is the drummer. I don't know anything about him, but he has a unique sound. I haven't figured it out yet, because he does not play complex patterns. I think it might be because he plays deep in "the pocket." As such, the drums really complement the vocals (also quite distinctive) and the guitars (which are rendered as if by a fifteen year old who has been playing for only six months but is completely serious and sincere). The only person in the unit that plays right on top of the beat is the bassist. So, kinda of like the Rolling Stones (who haven't paid any attention to since "Under My Thumb"), the playing is slightly disjointed but somehow holds together in totality. It's the bassist that holds it together. He deserves a good deal of the credit for the overall sound of the combo and its unique tunes. Drummers (pop music; not jazz) have been influenced by and even dictated to by drum machines for the past thirty years. I think that's it: This guy plays the tubs as if he's never heard a drum machine in his life and therefore betrays no influence by slick "beat oriented" studio productions of the past few decades.

Life might be full of disappointments but, quite on the contrary, through the years Spoon have proved a reliable source of enjoyment for me.

You might ask: what separates this band from thousands of other samey so-called indie bands? Lo-fi sound & look? checked. Praise from Pitchfork? Checked. Casual name-dropping by other indie acts/scenesters? Checked. Still, despite all evidence of the contrary, Spoon really manage to be one of a kind.
What makes them stand apart is what I used to call their trademark "coitus interruptus" sound, meaning infectious hooks that never really takes off and turn into a full-fledged chorus, remaining instead a hint, a tease to the ear.
This was especially apparent on one of their previous LPs, "Kill the moonlight", also a favourite of mine (not to say, the album through which I convinced most of my friends that this was truly a great band).
Beware, it is true that this album makes a few concessions to the classic song structure, thus slightly deviating from the aforementioned c.t. sound but, in the end, it's still there. Melodies that all sudden swerve to a different direction, riffs that instead of exploding into the boombastic apex you'd expext, implode or morph into something else.

I love this band and I think that this album will easily prove to be one of my favourite of the year (along with Blitzen Trapper's 'Wild Mountain Nation', for those interested).

I just discovered Spoon this spring (2022). Since then I’ve been trying to pick up all their albums on vinyl. _Transference_ is probably my favorite with _Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga_ in 2nd place. Their sound is disciplined with inventive fresh melodies moving just below the surface of the guitar work. I have 5 of their albums now and this one is still holding strong. Looking forward to finishing the collection!

Had a chance to see these guys at the E-town show they did in Boulder. I have to say, they're not the best interview, but man are they great to listen to. As a friend once said to me regarding their earlier Girls Can Tell release, "This is a disc that I will listen to once, then it somehow it gets stuck in my CD player for a month." Well, since mp3's have ruined that a bit, I don't know that this album will ever get the continuous play time the earlier releases did (having to get out the 30-disc case in your car, find a new CD, and then change discs made month long stints in the CD player MUCH more common). Either way, this release has songs that are going to find a good deal of radio play. You'll enjoy it, but definitely make sure you check out their earlier releases, particularly, Girls Can Tell and Kill the Moonlight.

    SPOON'S the Best band you've "never heard"!!! A month ago, I never had...now I own 4 SPOON CD's!
"GA GA GA GA GA GA" Certainly one of the best of theirs (although each is fantastic!) Particular favorite songs (which you may have heard, but are not aware): "Don't You Evah", "You Got Yr. Cherry Bomb" and "The Underdog". These songs have catchy beats. On other tracks, SPOON somehow merge instruments, chords & sounds that may not sound, at first, like they'd even go together, never mind sounding like "Ga-reat" music, but this is where their defining talent lies! And, once you've heard them, they're the musical form of potato chips; ya can't have just one!!!

It's truly difficult to understand why we're "spoon"-fed the usual drek when SPOON's making such amazing recordings!! SPOON are SO extraordinarily unique, creative & talented!!! All SPOON songs winners! Purchase SPOON "GAX5" you won't be disappointed and, like me, you'll be back for more sensational SPOON!!

Nice to have a record shipped from Amazon that doesn’t look like it’s been dropped off a building and rolled down a flight of stairs
