Product description
RILO KILEY UNDER THE BLACKLIGHT
Amazon.com
Since her band's last record (2004's More Adventurous), Rilo Kiley frontwoman Jenny Lewis has taken her one-time child-actress, pop-star status up a level, as her charismatic solo effort, Rabbit Fur Coat, was one of the top recordings of 2006. But those who feared she'd abandon her long-time mates to do it alone will be instantly comforted by a collection of songs so zestful and extravagantly produced that no less than four emerge tailor-made for pop radio. After the opener "Silver Lining" feeds off George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord" riff and some cajoling handclaps, Lewis reels in the glee with "Close Call," where the lavishness of the melodies outweighs the foreboding lyrics. The bouncy "Breaking Up," with the sun-splashed chorus "feels good to be free," is so absolutely California-beach perfect, it's ripe for a million-selling soda commercial, and then Lewis saves her vocal best for a trifecta near the end: Dusty Springfield soul ("15"), dancefloor power pop ("Smoke Detector"), and meltaway folk ("The Angels Hung Around"). Did it take their angel leaving the nest for a spell for Rilo Kiley to make their definitive record? The argument is futile, but the music is sublime. --Scott Holter

- Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2010From the gate this album delivers! The first six songs are all hit material ranging from pop to indie to disco, as are the last four songs. Rilo Kiley keeps getting better with each new release. The songs are all well written and Blake Sennett's turn at vocal on Dreamworld is on the money and very reminiscent of Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac. Jenny Lewis' songwriting and vocals are, as usual, Hall of Fame material. The song '15' is another Jenny Lewis burner reminiscent of Dusty Springfield. The opening track 'Silver Lining' is a top 10 hit hit if ever there was one. Every song on this album is well worth listening to repeatedly, the only exception being the song 'Dejalo'. I just couldn't get into this song. Bottom line, this is a classic Rilo Kiley album. I can't wait to hear what they come up with next. After reading some of the reviews I was hesitant to purchase this CD but I eventually made the leap. I'm so glad I did. I would have missed out in a big way. Buy this! You won't be sorry you did.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2008The story of my summer 2007 goes like this; I buy the new Rilo Kiley CD, "Under The Blacklight" after hearing it in an independent record store in Florida. My girlfriend and I love it so much we get copies for both our houses and both our cars. We play it for others. They all flip, all want it and get it. The CD becomes the new go-to for gifts (we all bought around 25 copies between us). Conversations become "what's your fave cut off the cd today?" or "Which song did you wake up with in your head that you can't shake?". I now have all of Rilo Kiley's music and all of Jenny Lewis'. Amazingly catchy, smart music.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 26, 2012I bought this album hoping to hear more of the funky, somewhat dark, and instantly catchy sounds of the song "The Moneymaker". The intensity and strong female vocals of that song conjure up the dark mystique of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Unfortunately, that was the only song on the album with anything like that sound.
Most of the songs on the album are enjoyable, but predictable, and wouldn't have persuaded me to make a purchase. Overall, the album has a campy vibe to it... pleasant female vocals, happy-sounding melodies, mid-tempo beats, crafted into average indie-pop songs.
The song "The Moneymaker" on it's own would get 5 stars and is definitely worth a listen. However, I'd recommend listening to sample clips of the other songs to figure out if the rest of this album has the sound that you are looking for.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2008A lot of the criticism I read about this album comes from "long-time" fans of the band, and I certainly understand this dynamic. The rest of the criticism seems to be directed at the lyrics. So, to make a long story short, if you don't expect a whole lot from an album's lyrics, and if you haven't already formed an opinion about how this band should sound, you will definitely enjoy this album. The melodies and arrangements are beautiful and fun, and the lyrics are playful and unusual. And then there's Jenny Lewis's singing. I originally rated this album 5, but 4 seems more correct now.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2019Rilo Kiley’s best album in my opinion. Of course I could listen to Jenny Lewis sing the alphabet.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2015This Rilo Kiley album is an instant classic full of brillant songs : dream world with a very powerful intro, under the black light, the money maker etc.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2007My impression, after only a listen or two, is that this would appeal more to fans of Jenny Lewis solo (specifically with the Watson Twins) than Rilo Kiley, except that this album adds some r&b/disco flavorings not present on that solo effort. Of course, if you like both, than you win anyway. Sort of.
I say "sort of" because there is nothing really great about this album, although there is nothing really bad about it either. And with the addition of the r&b/disco rhythms on some numbers, you would expect it to be more interesting than it turns out to be. In any event, its probably worth purchasing just to listen to Jenny sing!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 8, 2015Just love this CD when first came out. I am so happy that I could find it again.

5.0 out of 5 stars GANZ EINFACH DAS ALBUM DES JAHRES 2007
Rilo Kiley's Under the blacklight macht einfach glücklich, traurig und nachdenklich zugleich.

5.0 out of 5 stars Einfach Klasse
