Editorial Reviews
Battles' first album proper is a significant measure of evolution from a band that has yet to cease moving. Still entirely intact are the unflinching experimentations and metallic angles of their young catalog, but a new melodic insight has manifested itself in the form of some of their most engaging tracks yet. Mirrored has received 'Best Of 2007' accolades by the likes of TIME Magazine, NME, Pitchfork, URB, Spin, MOJO and others.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2008"Math rock" is usually associated with practical complexity. By this I mean that bands that are identified with the genre generally think about the way in which they can perform complex musical material in a live situation. Battles' "supergroup" pedigree includes math rock monsters such as Don Caballero and Helmet, and as a critical fan of so-called "math rock," they have piqued my curiosity since their first EP. However, I never bought any of their albums.
Then I saw the video for "Atlas," and this curiosity became a fascination. I have long been a fan of King Crimson circa 1980, and it seemed like Battles engages contemporary technology and virtuosity in the same way that Fripp and co. did on "Discipline." I immediately bought "Mirrored," and in the final weeks of 2007, it shot up my personal "album of the year" charts.
What is really fascinating and ultimately satisfying about "Mirrored" is unraveling its tapestry of execution. I love to contemplate "who" is playing "what." This form of listening is particularly stimulating when you have a band full of multinstrumentalists that sample, loop, tap, and generally thrash their way through their work.
As usual, the most publicly accessible song on the album is not necessarily the most representative. I think that "Atlas" is great. The video reflects the energy and experimentalism of the band very well. However, there are songs on the album that show "Atlas" to be the "single" that it is. "Tonto" is a beautiful piece of work, as is "Race: In" and "Tij." "Race: Out" is a fun "whack-a-mole" game of "who is playing what" and "Bad Trails" shows Battles' potential for more atmospheric work. The only work that I could offer any critique for is "Rainbows." It is wonderfully epic, and covers a great amount of musical ground, but seems a little repetitive. The same seven-minute song could potentially be done in five.
The lowdown: Battles creates highly active music that is satisfying on intellectual and accessible levels. To the passive listener, "Mirrored" may bring to mind the work of avant-garde DJ's, like DJ Shadow or BT. For the more invested listener, Battles' potential for mind-boggling virtuosity, a la King Crimson or Don Caballero, is similarly compelling. A quick YouTube search will confirm this - I dare you to check it out.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 26, 2022I love an album that I can listen to all the way through, with out skipping a song. This one nails it. Every listen i hear something new. Really digging it.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2008I had to come back to edit my review of after having this album for a while and the hype died down. Tt really doesn't hold up that well after repeated listens. The vocals are for the most part really annoying, with the exception of a few moments here and there. The songs, though having interesting parts and sounds, this is as far as it goes. It sounds just like that, a bunch of weird parts sort of stuck together. They lack any memorable structure. John Strainer's drumming is painfully stiff, especially in the opening track where there's absolutely no dynamics or feel to his afro-pop-esq opening rim shot pattern. Its a beat that should breath and flow with the accents of the song, but instead every note is played at one single volume, making the beat essentially grooveless. The second track is unbearable, I have to skip it every time.
In the battle between Battles, and Neo-Don Cab, Neo Cab are the clear winners.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2017If Pink Floyd or Emerson, Lake and Palmer had been at their creative peaks now, they would have been putting out music like this. Use of today's musical technology while still experimenting with things such as timing - much like Dave Brubaker did on the classic "Time Out" - makes their music intersting.
Pleasant, but not boring, listening.
Enjoy!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2007I came to this record with the bias of expecting Damon Che (Don Caballero's drummer). So it took me a while to really get past the fact that this is an entirely different project, though nonetheless incredibly engaging and as unique as the final two Don Cab records that included Ian Williams. It gets better every play, really. I'm very skeptical about "grower" records. This is one. It is real. And it is GOOD!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2014This record is literally bursting with musical ideas based mostly on how to manipulate live performance with technology. It's really exciting, adventurous rock. I already had a huge admiration for Ian Williams in Don Cab, and hadn't heard of the other dudes before this band, but it's really, really good, and always interesting.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2019this thing is literally bursting with creativity. plz get it

5.0 out of 5 stars Battles: Mirrored (2007)

5.0 out of 5 stars l'odissea nello spazio dei Battles
