Product description

With Boxer, the National have reached four albums into their increasingly lauded career, never hurrying the tempo, never over-reaching in volume or instrumental density. Instead, the quintet's balanced on a pin, emotionally austere, if not utterly downhearted, finding brilliantly dusky ways for Matt Berninger's lovelorn voice to mesh with a pair of unobtrusive guitars and, here, an occasional phalanx of piano, horns, and strings. The tunes roll off slowly, Berninger's lyrics hugging the instruments with a sad brawn, rough-hewn as the drums and bass toy with angularity (try "Mistaken for Strangers," for one) but end up woven by that voice. Drummer Bryan Devendorf presses the songs forward repeatedly, as on "Start a War," where he gently thumps the time as the acoustic guitars frame and dot the melody, coalescing as the drums starkly chisel the melody. Nary a distortion pedal is harmed on Boxer, giving the National a magnetism so forlorn that you can't stop listening. --Andrew Bartlett
Review
"...churning grooves and shambling new wave rips, turning up depressed guitar poetry that's both elegantly wasted and kinda murky" -- Rolling Stone
"The National traffic in poignant moments of heartbreak and regret, but pain has rarely sounded so beautiful" -- Spin

- Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2007Its just real Music. From the first track (Fake Empire) to the last Track (Gospel), The album takes you on a journy of emotions. Some good some not so good, yet all essential in making this album one of those must have pieces of music that everyone should own. I first heard The National when I purchased ALLIGATOR. This being the followup I had much concern and reservation that BOXER could top the great lyrics and wonderful music play of ALLIGATOR. Well it went above and beyond, Because you just can't pick one song to be the best. It's just a true album, not what were used to in a day of singles and filler tracks If you took one song away from the album you would lose the intensity of the album as a whole. You must own this it is perfect for the car, the office/shop, or the home.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2021I'm happy with the quality of the album, as far as appearances, but won't know quality of the record until after Christmas, when my son plays it for the first time. I appreciate the seller reaching out to me when DHL tracking was really misleading, and hard to understand, but the seller was great and I would definitely purchase from him again.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2008This album is amazing. Lyrics are deep as hell. Thick with imagery. It will make you sit around and reflect on your life as you listen to the songwriter reflect on his. The music is perfect. On the opening track, "Fake Empire" they resist the urge to go in for the kill early insteads they choose for a steady ride to the finish. The entire album Nothing is overdone. It all fits in the right place. Its like channeling the best of 80's R.E.M. and U2 with a touch of the Smiths to go with it. Like listening to a Rock Symphony. Easily, hands down, the best purchase I made last year. A true 5 star album.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2007This album has been described as sounding like a monotone lecture read within a much more powerful musical composition. This might be true in that the tone of this artist's voice seems as if it could be mistaken as the same from one track to the next. Nonetheless, in this case, it works...and it works well. Even if it were to be played on loop, ten times in one sitting, each song would be more overwhelming than the last, and every time the same track was heard for the second, third or fourth time, the sound would seem more pure that that of previous listens. This album, in its entirety, is definitely one of the best to be offered this year.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2008Three of the music magazines I read on a regular basis anointed Boxer as the best album of 2007. The panegyrics were so similar, I had to wonder whether the same writer was working for all three magazines. Is Boxer good? Undoubtedly. But is it the best album of 2007? Not nearly.
I own a couple other albums by The National and already owned this at the time of its coronation. When compared to other albums by the band, Boxer comes as quite a surprise. It is lyrically reminiscent of Tindersticks and Arab Strap, but the vocals are mostly in a droning monotone. The music itself can be surprisingly fast-paced in comparison with the vocals, the fact of which can give an impression of dissonance. Strong percussion and spare but excellent orchestration boost its appeal.
I pretty much enjoy the entire album with the exception of Green Gloves, which I do not care for. The best cuts are Mistaken For Strangers, Brainy, and Slow Show. A booklet containing lyrics would have been beneficial, after all The National are as much about their lyrics as they are about their music. What you get instead is an expanded cover insert that contains a few pictures and the usual album information.
With Boxer, The National shows fans that at least they are willing to take musical risks and not keep rehashing the tried and true. And that's a good thing. So while I reiterate that Boxer is not the best of 2007, that doesn't mean its not worth hearing.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2013The headline pretty much says it all. From the deep, self-doubting tones of Matt Berninger's voice to the lovely musical arrangements, the musicians of The National sound their best on vinyl. For the longest time I was a digital only music fan. I have listened to this album countless times in mp3 format and I can tell you, it has never sounded as good or as moving as when I put it on my turntable. I've even done and A/B comparison (since my receiver has a USB input), playing the same tracks on mp3 and vinyl and the difference is clear. Bands like The National helped push me into getting my current stereo set up and so far the investment has been well worth it.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 30, 2015This is by far one of the greatest albums I have ever had the privilege of purchasing on both vinyl and CD. I purchased this album on CD earlier this year and it has become one the best albums I purchased this year. I just bought here on Amazon on vinyl, but my only criticism on this is I thought I was buying it on black vinyl, but I got it in colored vinyl. I know most people would be thrilled to have it in colored vinyl, but I already have it in colored vinyl. So just letting people know that when you purchase this album it's going to be in colored vinyl NOT BLACK VINYL.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excelente disco

5.0 out of 5 stars The National Boxer is a start of long journey
Tolle LP im gelben vinyl. Die Musik spricht sowieso für sich. Wer The National noch nicht kennt, findet mit diese LP einen guten Einstieg.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Record from a Great Band
When this record had come out, very few bands sounded like the National. This was a band so at ease with itself, so confident in their direction, and really at the peak of their musical and songwriting prowess. Not one track can be considered filler or less accomplished than any other. Every song feels delicately crafted, but always packs an emotional punch that leaves you wanting to reflect upon its meaning and listen again. Both words and music intertwine with nothing short of elegance and grace.
As pretentious as I'm making it all sound, this album is anything but. It's a down to earth, melodic, and sonically brilliant record, beautifully recorded and produced. Make no mistake, The National have released some great works since Boxer, but for me, this really is their pinnacle. Without question it is one of the best records of the oughts, and certainly of the last 20+ years.
