After the surprisingly spare acoustic diversion of 2005's acclaimed Howl, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club's fourth album returns the San Francisco group to the big guitars and rock swagger of their earlier albums. Baby 81 is a loud affair, and with each track polished to a high shine (the album was self-produced by the band, co-produced by Michael Been, who formerly led the Call), the results are slick and serviceable rock. BRMC are sometimes accused of rehashing courses charted by earlier bands, and here that tendency occasionally works in their favor ("All You Do Is Talk" opens on an airy organ, recalling U2's majestic "Where the Streets Have No Name"), but also leads inevitably to comparison (much of Baby 81 evokes Oasis or a T-Rex-lite sound). Here's hoping BRMC won't shy away from following their noses down some previously unexplored musical paths in the future. --Ben Heege

- Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2016I heard "Lien On Your Dreams" on BABY 81 from Pandora radio & immediately loooved the song & Had to check out the rest. I believe it was sent to me for the same station as The Jesus & Mary Chain. I do hear a bit of The Jesus And Mary Chain sound w/less fuzz & distortion & tend to hear more Love & Rockets.
In any event, I think BRMC. have established a sound of their own & I give them immense credit for rocking & rocking hard, without getting lumped in with metal (which doesn't seem to be easy to accomplish, even though they are not metal, but all too often if a band "rocks", they get thrown into the metal category). So, I'm elated BRMC have eluded that classification & remain above all else...the rockers they are!!!
While "Lien On Your Dreams" is what drove me initially, every single song on this CD is a winner! They open Strong with "Took Out A Loan", "Berlin" and "Weapon Of Choice"....great, heavy, driving rock at its' finest!! Now, I've said I wasn't particularly reminded of J&M Chain...when we get to Track #5, "Cold Wind", the "influences" I hear are Alice in Chains, Sonic Youth, maybe a little Nirvana and even a little STP (Stone Temple Pilots, during their "Tiny Songs...Vatican Gift Shop time). This doesn't mean BRMC remind me of grunge music, either, not at all. If that plays any influence, BRMC cranks it up & turns it on its' ear, firmly stamping it as the Rock that it is!!! I've just scratched the surface with mentioning my favorites from BABY 81, but all tracks Strong Winners! I also feel it's fine if a band incorporates a certain "something" from a band, or bands, who influenced them.
BABY 81's one of the Finest albums - of All genres & all decades - not only rock, to come since the early-mid 2000's garage-rock revival! Black Rebel Motorcycle Club keep on rockin'!...'ya got it down!! Since this purchase, have also gotten "Take Them On, On Your Own & Beat The Devil's Tattoo - Also highly recommend!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2008This is the 4th release from BRMC. If you've not listened to BRMC before this is a great release to hear. You'll also appreciate their first 2 releases. In BABY 81, the group has seasoned and grown their sound. There is less of the scratchy/fuzzy sounds from their first release but the sound is the same and more well rounded. The title cut, BABY 81, rocks strong as does "I took out a loan." These are my 2 favs but you won't find loser track here. I saw this band 2x times in Atlanta before moving to Seattle to work for some ecommerce company out here. I hope I get to see them again.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2019Arrived new and in great condition. I love this CD and it plays fine in my car.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2010After the subdued album from 2005 "Howl" BRMC is back on the more hard pounding track. This does not mean that the melodic side of the group is shelved; actually several of the punk inspired tracks are quite melodic.
The album has quite a long playing time and it may take some time to form a good overview of it. A single number; "American X" goes on for over nine minutes, and since it is not among the best songs of the album, it may well appear rather longwinded, and may tempt you to skip to the next track.
The album opens with the heavy bluesy "Took Out a Loan", after which the pace goes up with two punky but catchy songs; "Berlin" and "Weapon of Choice", the latter has a little Led Zeppelin over it with the acoustic intro.
"Window" is an almost Beatles-like song with piano accompaniment. One of the highlights.
Inspiration from the Velvet Underground seems evident at the next numbers. "Cold Wind" starts with a "Waiting for the Man" beat, and develops with distorted guitars into almost like Nirvana.
"Not What You Wanted" is more melodic, with nice acoustic guitars in the foreground and with a nice drive.
"666 Conductor," may seem somewhat monotonous, but eventually you're taken by the great lyrics which, as far as I read them, are open for for different interpretations.
The absolute highlight is "All You Do is Talk," which after a Coldplay-like start develops into a "Heroes"-like beat with fine vocal-harmonies that will spell-bound the listener.
The next few tracks are quite good but not particularly memorable. "Killing the Light" is a different number with its waltzy beat, and along with "Am I Only" a number that could easily bring Radiohead to mind. "American X" is actually also a good number but it goes on for too long. End number "The Likes of You" I could have done without; seems somewhat cluttered and unfinished - is also listed as a bonus track.
A really good album that probably would had won, if the playing time had been cut down a little . Some numbers could be shorter and a few songs I could have done without.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2007Baby 81 is absolutely the best cd release of 2007. BRMC's bluesy rock lifts and fills you. It's their well-crafted sound that transports you; their lyrics are uneven and could be improved, but you won't care. It's the group's music and craftsmanship that is the draw here. There's not a wasted cut on the entire play list.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2013Addictive sexy rock & roll like only BRMC know how to to create. T
his is in my top ten faves of all time I absolutely adore this CD!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 13, 2008I can't get enough of this album, its incredibly good!!! Honestly, I don't know much about this genre, usually I listen to pop music but this band is soooo so good that I'm making an exception. Its a must have, ppl go ahead and buy it!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars I really love this album.
Lots of people don't care for this album, but I really love it. Again Robert mumbles through his songs which is annoying but the music and Peter's singing/guitar work are great.
