Editorial Reviews

Product Description

"Sky Blue Sky" has hints of early-seventies Southern California folk-rock sweetness in the harmonies. The album is filled with brash guitar solos that take songs like "You Are My Face" and "Shake It Off" in unexpected directions.

Amazon.com

After their wild experimental streak of the past decade, Wilco's sixth studio album might feel like a bit of a comedown. Sky Blue Sky is mellow, moody, and uncharacteristically monotone, opening with a pleasant jangle and Jeff Tweedy singing a simple song: "Maybe the sun will shine today, the clouds will blow away." He doesn't even follow it up with a barbed punchline. Could it be that the restless Chicago band has settled back into its gentle Americana roots--or does this sudden mid-career reappraisal represent Wilco's gutsiest move yet? Mostly written in the studio by the full band, it's certainly the group's most cohesive album in ages, presenting a dense song cycle padded with intricate guitar work, brushed rhythms, and '70s soft-rock accents. In places it sounds like Wings ("Hate It Here"), in others Harry Nilsson ("Walken"), and in the middle it goes a bit Grateful Dead ("Shake It Off"). At the same time, there's a distinct sense of hearing a band finally at ease in its own skin. Sky Blue Sky represents the sound of Wilco finally pulling through its petulant adolescence. --Aidin Vaziri

Top reviews from the United States

I could not disagree more with the negative reviews of this album. It is an incredibly tender and subtle work that continues to reveal itself over time. I love the 70's rock pallet that Wilco employs on many of the songs and the lyrics are touching and inspiring. The music explains itself to the attentive listener, but I must address the critics of the lyrics.

Jeff Tweedy is responsible for some of my favorite lyrics over the years and the thing I love most about Sky Blue Sky is his emotional progression as an artist. Sky Blue Sky is the other side of Jeff's frequently depressed and dark lyrics. Where once he wrote "I know that I would die if I could come back new" he now writes "Either way, I'm gonna stay right for you." This is not to say that Tweedy has become an overly-hopeful cheese ball. Perhaps the most touching moment on the album is when he sings, "I should warn you when I'm not well, I can't tell." It is Tweedy's ability to take a discussion of the individual's lack of self awareness during bouts of mental illness and refine the truth down to a single sentence.

One thing I will mention about the music is the cohesion of the band - It reaches new heights. Many of the Wilco projects could be better described as Jeff Tweedy and Friends. This is simply not the case with Sky Blue Sky. Tweedy is still the captain but every member of his crew is essential to the musical journey and they are each clearly a part of the song crafting.

To be fair, Wilco has yet to make what I would consider a perfect album, but then again, few artist ever have. What Sky Blue Sky achieves however, is a subtle blend of honesty and maturity expressed by a group of musicians who clearly enjoy making music together.

If you love the beautiful guitar work of Nels Cline, you came to the right place! He is given ample room on each song to make incredible things happen. On this particular album, he is backed by a band from Chicago called Wilco.

After reading many reviews from die-hard Wilco fans, many of them will take issue with the title of my review. I can almost predict them now: "Classic Wilco?...but, but, but, they don't sound like "Yankee..." or "A ghost..." anymore...-those- were classic Wilco.

    I disagree.

Whether with "YHF", "A ghost..", or any other Wilco album, Jeff Tweedy's ingenuity lies in his endless ability to recycle, then make his own, a huge pallette of musical influences from the 60s and 70s. Sky Blue Sky is just a continuation or evolution of his method.

Some people seem upset that "Sky" doesn't contain the noise driven interludes of its two predecessors, but if you listen closely, they're still there. Most of the songs on "Sky" do contain some spaces for improvisation, albeit more muted.

I read one review in a major publication that called "Sky" parody. The old saying goes that imitation is the highest form of flattery. While "Sky" contains a long list of musical cliches from the 60s and 70s, it's difficult to say whether it's outright mockery or parody. If it is, then Beck and Wilco have elevated parody to the highest art form, and in the process seen tremendous success.

Can you hear Grateful Dead on "Sky"? Sure. Some Steely Dan thrown in for good measure? Sure. Eagles or Don Henley? Check. Prog rock elements? Yep. It's all in there.

Sky Blue Sky may just be Wilco's best record to date. Not in spite of the influences, or in spite of being mellower than their previous efforts, but precisely because of it.

Wilco owes its existence to classic rock (a radio format I loathe with a passion), and in the process, has become classic (not to mention classy) itself. Rock on, Mr. Tweedy!

The subsequent DvD is remarkable. The director and Cinematography are stellar. Tweedy is obviously happy and optimistic due to falling in love and getting married. He deserves all the happiness he can get. The Dvd is so simple and perfect. I fell asleep watching it at one thirty am on new years morn, drunk on chateau nuf du pop and Millesime Champagne. It is a peaceful film to put you to sleep for the start of an epic new year. When I woke up at seven a.m. on my lazy boy I thought to myself, " I'm gonna shake it off!". The guitar solos you would think are a bit too much for almost every song but this sonic genius deserves a solo in every Wilco song as long as he chooses to remain in Wilco. Led Zeppelin was allowed infinite solos and so should this guitar giant. The best thing to happen to Wilco other than Jeff was this tall musical guitar hero. I look forward to hearing his solos or slides. I love seeing Jeff Happy. This album and dvd are very important for any Wilco fan, any film maker and any Wilco virgins. I listen to this album every time I eat supper with my woman. She always says "Your on a Wilco kick, huh?" The album makes me believe in bands again. The album makes me believe in love again. Production is tight. Tom Petty, and Bob Dylan love this album I am sure of. Jimmy page is definitely enjoying the solos on the DvD. Thanks for making real honest music guys!

Genial. Lo recibí ok. No sabía que lo habían editado como doble LP. Ahora lo hacen con muchos, dicen que hay una mejora en la grabación, pero no lo explican bien. Suena muy bien igualmente. Un gran disco.

I heard Impossible Germany on R6 & love all the complicated guitar parts. I was only familiar with the Mermaid Avenue album they made with Billy Bragg & Uncle Tupelo. There’s a lot to explore & the mood is mostly reflective. I’ve bought a couple more albums since & think they are very Interesting
