Editorial Reviews

Product description

CD

Amazon.com

As if getting a spread in a popular home décor magazine just a month prior to this album's release wasn't enough of a tipoff, Blonde Redhead have come a long way since their days of mimicking Sonic Youth's brittle art-rock. Clanging guitars have been replaced by warm synthesizers and soft strings, while Japanese singer Kazu Makino's thin voice has become a ghostly moan on the grandiose opener and title track of the New York trio's seventh full-length release, 23. Their last one, 2004's Misery Is a Butterfly, was a lovely throwback to the dream-pop heyday of the Cocteau Twins and Lush. This one presses further down that road, only with a more experimental streak, as cascading guitars, military rhythms, and wobbly melodies shape opulent, otherworldly songs like "The Dress" and "My Impure Hair." --Aidin Vaziri

I consider this one of the best albums that I have come across. It represents the perfect marriage of avant-garde experimentalism and sugary melodic pop. The music is driving and propulsive but never oppressive, always maintaining a certain playfulness. The instrumentation is unique and while seemingly uncomplicated when listening to any isolated element, it is layered and mixed in such a manner that an unpredictable complexity ensues. Kazu's voice is sweet, haunting, and searing in equal measures and she wields it with absolute mastery. It truly is as close to a perfect album as I have heard in years. Five stars with no hesitation.

They go for a lighter, poppier sound in this outing but it's still great. It manages to be catchy and pop-like, yet beautiful. A great summer album. Some people have dismissed it as too commercial sounding but I'm not put off by its accessibility at all. A very "pretty" album, and I mean that in a good way.

I cannot say that I'm a fan of Blonde Redhead's previous works, but this album is quite amazing. The slow melodic vocals and ambient tones set this cd apart from the others. I took a chance on the cd and have no regrets... I've enjoyed it immensely

This was my first intro to Blonde Redhead. I'm always looking for new bands to listen to. There's a mixture of mellow, soothing cuts to more fast-paced ones that maintain their spaciousness and sense of gothic romance. It's quite easy to listen to this CD over and over again, as I have.

This album is absolutely amazing. Addicting, intoxicating, enchanting, I love it and I listen to it frequently! I recommend as an intro to blonde redhead.

5.0 out of 5 stars Disco molto ispirato

Disco molto ispirato; i Blonde Redhead, dopo quasi dieci anni da "In An Expression Of The Inexpressible" pubblicano un altro capolavoro.
Stavolta i suoni sono cambiati: molto meno noise, meno "cattivo", ma più ricco di elementi pop sognanti. Melodie ispiratissime che rimangono (piacevolmente) in testa dopo il primo ascolto.

5.0 out of 5 stars essential & a display of passion brilliance & magic
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 21, 2012
Opens with the passionate '23' and the spell is cast with Kazu providing another magical performance, about how in 23 seconds so much can happen to change a life, and the number 23 chosen because of its enigmatic theories "23 magic, if you change the name of love". Kazu continues the brilliance with 'Dr. Strangeluv' with so many beautiful sounds & vocals...another melodic winner with Amedeo creating the guitar fills. Then emerges the best track (so far) in 'The Dress' with Kazu's strange vocals "Horse loves you when you move with him...people hate you when you're changing"....& the Japanese sounding keyboard backing heightens the atmosphere. Now it's the turn of Amedeo via 'S.W.' and his vocal interpretation reaches Kazu's and is a powerful sound of high emotion. Amedeo follows up with the wonderful 'Spring And By Summer Fall' with its steady urgent drumming (Simone as always doing superb drums). Kazu with 'Silently' probably the most commercial here & reminds a little of Supremes 'Baby Love'. 'Publisher' a gloomy sounding effort with synth dominating "Say what you say, say it like a cat Say it to my face and say what you know everyone says". 'Heroine' a pretty piece which is seemingly about a friend Roland committing suicide. 'Top Ranking' "I take my ceder to where the mountain is high" as Kazu takes us up there via beautiful sounds, a catchy refrain & is apparently about the horrors of the Vietnam war (yes this is not party music). Final track is the weird 'My Impure Hair' which is perhaps the weakest here.. Perhaps not as strong or beautiful as previous LP 'Misery Is A Butterfly' but nevertheless essential & a display of passion brilliance & magic.
