Product Description

`Historic', `sensational', `flamboyant' and `without-any-doubt original' are just some of the adjectives being thrown around by critics in praise of 22 year-old UK newcomer, Mika's eclectic debut album, Life In Cartoon Motion.

Fun, smart, musically adventurous and thematically provocative, the songs on Life In Cartoon Motion, all of them written and produced by Mika, combine euphoric rushes of melody with darker unexpected elements. They range from bright daytime melodramas to night-time tales of love, loss, abandonment, hope and happiness. Each is a splendid blend of fresh imagination and deft pop craftsmanship.

Album gems such as "Grace Kelly," "Lollipop," Billy Brown," and "Relax And Take It Easy," display Mika's innovative wordplay. `I've always respected people who make great records to their own vision,' writes the quixotic Mika. Mission accomplished!

The pop world might be all cooing 'n' cross-eyed over this flamboyant elfin with extended tail-feathers, as if it were shaken suddenly from a slumber, but the arrival of such a character was in fact always inevitable. He's an unlikely but traceable amalgamation of random pop culture explosions from the past few years--two parts Paulo Nutini, one part Kemal from Big Brother, a dash of Daphne & Celeste, a barrel measure of Scissor Sisters, and another pinch of post-ironic dancing to Elton John at the Students' Union gone midnight. It's no secret that the UK has a weakness for pretty-boy singer songwriters either--he fits in there too, in that he's about to stick its index finger in the socket and pour it a drink.

Give it 12 months and you might be taking out a restraining order--Mika will split opinion--but his quasi-soul falsetto is unbelievable, that much is immediately obvious. There are moments nearing syrupy Feeling-esque normalcy (take "My Interpretation"), but those aside it's high camp insatiability all the way. There's a hint of Freddie Mercury’s theatricality in the voice, and in "Big Girl" he's even written a modern day "Fat Bottomed Girls". "Lollipop" is Jake Shears leading the Jackson 5, "Love Today" is the missing link between the Bee Gees and Village People and "Relax, Take It Easy" is a chilled Pet Shop Boys in gold lamé. Too cheesy to be a classic, perhaps, but this is just the brand of subversive eccentricity Robbie has failed miserably to achieve over his past few albums. --James Berry

I am not much of a pop fan. Okay, I'll admit that I have some on my computer and it is really catchy, but in general pop isn't my first choice of what to listen to. Nevertheless...
A couple weeks ago, someone linked me to the music video of Lollipop. I was addicted instantly. After checking out some of Mika's other music videos, I knew I just had to get this CD. That investment paid off - I'm not entirely sure just what it is that makes almost every track on this album so irresistable, but Mika's got it down to an art.
Most of the tracks are bouncy, catchy fare, although they're far from being meaningless fluff. For instance, "Grace Kelly" apparently talks about Mika's frustration with the music industry's attempts at creating his image for him, "Lollipop" is a message from Mika to his little sister about love, and "Big Girl (You Are Beautiful)" reminds women that big can be beautiful - Mika again draws on personal experience here, as his mother was a larger woman and he saw the way people treated her based on her weight.
My main problem with the album is that Mika, like so many other artists, can't resist throwing some slow songs into an otherwise energetic, fast-paced album. Thankfully, his slow songs aren't bad, but I'm still not a fan of artists insisting on throwing slow songs into an album when they're really not needed.

The first time I ever heard anything from Mika was when my younger sister showed me the video for Happy Ending. I was so distracted and impressed with the video itself that I didn't pay too much attention to the song. (I sadly tend to do that a lot.) About a month or so later, I thought, "What was that song with the really cool video?" and ended up searching all over for it until I ended up listening to the entire album via youtube. I fell in love. Since then, Mika has been one of my favorite artists of all time. (Which is something I can't really say about most pop artists out there. Not to mention, my taste in music normally falling under the Danny Elfman/Oingo Boingo or They Might Be Giants category...)

I love everything about this album, from the lyrics to the music, his voice... The songs are all very catchy and fun, including the more depressing ones. One probably wouldn't notice how pessimistic "Lollipop" (which has become my personal favorite) is on their first listen. The songs are very easy to relate to (at least for me) and make me feel like running around the streets, bursting out in song.

I wish I could put it into better words. But yes, I love this album and I'd recommend it to anyone. Five stars.

Looks like plenty of other people have logged in to either gush wildly about Mika, or complain bitterly about his last concert (rather than the recording in question). As someone old enough to actually remember when Queen and Freddie Mercury were new instead of retro, I don't know if I agree with all the comparisons being made here. Mika's clearly masterful at constructing seamless, highly polished pop, with a flexible, wide-ranging voice, and an ability to invent hooks that embed in your brain and stick. That's not an easy thing to do: good bubblegum is not that easy to construct. This music is a confection, and as delightful (and nearly addictive) as candy. But I also hear a darker current in these songs: the "admirer" who keeps calling and calling on the phone, the person who prompts the line "I don't care if I ever talk to you again," the ex who is encouraged to take that unfortunate emotional phone message he didn't mean to leave and "Erase" it, and the genuinely despondent "Happy Ending," all indicate that the "Love" that "everybody" is in today has its problems. I look forward to Mika's ongoing development as a songwriter.

This guy's voice is amazing! If you miss the days when male singers were really singers and not some pop-image being marketed to 12 year-olds, you will really enjoy Life In Cartoon motion. The last decade of Pop music, especially here in the states, has been so uninventive, predictable, and dull --particularly in the male vocalist genere. I had forgotten what it was like to hear an album free of over-sung boy-bandish sappy ballads and/or whiny 'unplugged' misery-songs. Mika's Life in Cartoon Motion is a welcome breath of fresh air and I would venture to say he one of the best all-around artists to come along in a very VERY long time. If you loved Prince, George Michael, Freddy Mercury, Elton John, or Michael Jackson when they were at the top of their game you will really appreciate this guy's voice and song-writing. Mika's range is remarkable and his ability to sing with a flamboyant-abandon but still be in control is nothing short of fabulous! It is easily one of the best albums I have bought in the last five years.

The good - the vinyl itself is a good quality disc with some heft to it. The cover has accurate colors and looks nice all around.

The bad - I'm not sure why, but this just isn't a good version of this album. I own it on CD and digital, where the sound is much less compressed and, more importantly, doesn't distort. This vinyl distorts quite a bit on all of the vinyl players I've tried it on.

I do not recommend buying this if you plan to listen to it.
