Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Filled with layers of violin, glockenspiel, vocal harmonies, guitar, piano and the most amazing whistling, ARMCHAIR APOCRYPHA is the latest from Andrew Bird. Bird enlisted his touring drummer Martin Dosh and several other musicians to create this melancholy collage of gentle pop songs. Primarily a violinist, Andrew Bird has pioneered his own distinct sound as an eclectic instrumentalist and songwriter.

Strip away the music of an Andrew Bird song, and you're left with brilliant prose ("across the great chasms and schisms and the sudden aneurysms"), vignettes about mentally fending off plane crashes, infiltrating characters like the kings of Macedonia and Lou Dobbs, and titles such as "Yawny at the Apocalyspe." It's hard to believe that, really, his music reigns, but when Bird adds understated acoustic guitars, Wurlitzer and Rhodes, and his own mesmerizing pizzicato violin, his songs take on a progressive mood all their own. The Chicago Bird's tenth album (and his debut for extraordinary Mississippi blues label Fat Possum) is perhaps his most diverse, expansive, and resourceful yet, catering to a half-dozen genres of music while exploring storylines that are naïve ("Dark Matter"), candid ("Fiery Crash"), and blatantly comical ("Armchairs"). Making no palpable effort to crack the conventional with overflowing melodies and love songs, Bird instead latches up the intellect to create tiny packages of literature that make always leave you thinking--and snapping your fingers at the same time. --Scott Holter

This is one of my favorite Andrew Bird albums, and it sounds great on vinyl. No warping, no weird feedback.

Glad we got this on vinyl it’s terrific

This is the album that made me fall in love with Andrew Bird's music. The 180g vinyl is very solid and heavy, making it less prone to warping over time. Some claim that you can get better sound from a heavier vinyl, but I wouldn't be able to say for sure. Comes packaged in the standard Amazon vinyl shipping box, so any damage would certainly come from shipping carrier handling. Overall great product and shipping was very fast

The vinyl is a bit warped, but it came with a sticker declaring, “We’re trying our best,” so I’ll give them a pass. I bought this album on CD more than a decade ago and have loved it since. Andrew Bird is quite literally a musical genius.

I've had this album for months now and I can't stop listening to it. I love his older work too, but this album is just incredible. Some songs - the ones that start slower like Cataracts and Armchairs - took me a while to get into, but when I finally really listened to them I kept going back to them. The instrumental song at the end of the album is the only one I haven't really been captured by. I can't wait for the next album from Mr. Bird, his talent is overwhelming!

If you love LPs for the physical appeals: Get it. Its a beautiful cover and a nice heavy vivyl record.

If you are an audiophile: Get it. Sound quality is great on my Audio-Technica driven by a Sony 105W/Channel receiver. Quality is one of those that's instantly, notably, better than you've heard before on your ipod. Great recordings pressed on the vinyl even though i'm sure its been originally recorded for digital audio.

I'm disappointed that some people review this album, and others by Bird, and dock him a star because they didn't like the album as much as another Bird album they heard. Not fair! Bird's work, in my opinion, is better on his worse day than most artists on their best days. Let's face it, people hold Bird to a very high standard, and that speaks volumes about him as an artist. If this isn't a 5 star album, I don't know what is.

4.0 out of 5 stars Polistrumentista da scoprire
Reviewed in Italy on April 5, 2021

Absolutely love this album and its presentation. As a kickstart to my rebuilding of a decent CD collection this was my debut: felt like an appropriate honour to a fantastic musician.
