Product description
Ferry,Bryan ~ Dylanesque - OUT-OF-PRINT CD , Singer from ROXY MUSIC interprets classic BOB DYLAN songs , 11 tracks
Amazon.com
Long a Bob Dylan fan, Bryan Ferry remade "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" for his 1973 self-titled album of covers. This time around, the celebrated Roxy Music leader turns in Dylanesque, recasting 11 Dylan classics during a single live-in-the-studio week that leaves the album sounding vibrantly faithful to the original numbers. Far be it for the imaginative contrarian to retrace Dylan's steps, and sure enough--despite an omnipresent harmonica--Ferry does just the opposite. The raw rocker "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues" becomes a seductive British pop song, while despair and loneliness turn into effervescence for the driving "Simple Twist of Fate." Ferry's ageless tenor injects a modern momentum into early Dylan imprints "Positively 4th Street" (with strings!), "All I Really Want to Do," and "The Times They Are A-Changing," and gloriously respects the more recent "Make You Feel My Love" (from 1997's Time out of Mind). But the best is yet to come, as the oft-covered "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" may never have received better treatment and "Baby, Let Me Follow You Down" loses not a beat of its original knock-down luster. The record closes with "All Along the Watchtower," a twin tribute to Dylan and Jimi Hendrix, the visionary for this adaptation. --Scott Holter

- Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2007I find the vitriol hurled at this CD to be especially appalling. This is a fine work. I've shared it with many friends, Dylan fans, and they all love it. Anyone who knows anything about Dylan knows that he constantly reinterprets his songs live, so what's the beef that Ferry follows Dylan's lead? Here, Ferry teases out the melodies that Dylan often only implies--which is Dylan's way, and that's totally cool, not meant as a criticism at all. The playing is subtle and informed. Ferry's harmonica is especially interesting, since it owes more, I think, to his keyboard articulation than to the traditional player's guitar in terms of phrasing.
There is not a duff track on this CD. You all know the songs and the arrangements already from previous reviews. The hostile criticism brings to mind a Dylan concert long ago, when he appeared with the Band and was booed for going electric. Some people need to grow up. Ferry is moving atmospherics and subtlety into arrangements in new ways, interesting ways. And guys, there is no connection whatsoever to Manilow. Clearly, this fine CD is not intended for the tone deaf. The rest of us will have it in their players for months and years to come. It's superb.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 3, 2011This is good stuff! Bryan Ferry in good voice, his production and arrangements are comparable to Jeff Lynn at his peak(Wilbury's,Cloud Nine,Full Moon..etc). It has that jangling sound, that is.
The songs are the best, BoB Dylan's. I only wish there had been more of them. The last time I remember anyone doing Dylan like this was Judy Collins' 1988 tribute,Just Like A Woman. It seems to compliment this cd, because they are totally different songs. It is as if they were planned not to clash. I also recommend Bryan Ferry's Frantic from 2002. It also has Dylan songs on it. It's another 5 star effort. Knockin' On Heaven's door is 6:15 long. The repetition of the chorus seems to change the mood of the song, from a solemn anthem to a glorious celebration. Repetition is change said Gertrude Stein, I'm beginning to understand. Or it's probably some subliminal element hidden within the performance. Others have noticed it also. One friend of mine wants Bryan's version to be played at his funeral.I want "Ding Dong the Witch Is Dead" at mine.I hope Bryan will make a recording of that. My personel favorite cut from the cd is the Gates of Eden.Bravo! Well Done Bryan!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2024Dylanesque is an album that doesn't beg for a review. But here we go. It's Bryan Ferry covering 11 Dylan songs. The band is warm, organic and very good. And Ferry is very good here, though a bit restrained. There are highlights, such as second track Simple Twist of Fate. But the album works well as a whole, and actually sounds very much like a short live set (42.29). Very good would describe a lot here, so there's a desire to want some of it to be better than it is, so I don't give it 5 stars. But if you're looking for something different from Ferry and something that is very enjoyable for about a perfect time length, Dylanesque fits the bill. It's hard to critique something that nails being so enjoyable as Dylanesque does, so just enjoy it.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2007Ferry's recording of Dylan songs seems to be somewhat misunderstood. Allow me to clarify.
#1: There is a little joke here; the songs are Euro-noire' versions of Dylan classics.
#2: The studio band sounds more like Dire Straits than Roxy Music.
#3: David Bowie has covered Brian Wilson, Richard Thompson-Hank Willams while Emmy Lou Harris has a definite U2 sound on "Wrecking Ball" and "Red Dirt Girl", etc.
#4: Ferry and Roxy Music have always been about romantic seduction. The suggestion I make here is that certain "purists" stop pouring over old copies of the "No Depression" magazine, get over it and relate to a real human being.
All that being said; tracks #1 & #4 are clearly superior. I gave this 4 star recording 5 stars to make a point.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2011Bought the DVD first and loved it. Still play it the most frequently of any of my music DVD collection. A great session from a very tight band.
Not much more to say about the CD - Ferry manages to add so much to the originals without taking anything away, if that makes sense. With "Watchtower" he has to do it to both the Dylan original and the classic Hendrix cover, and he does!
Brilliant album.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2016I love Bryan's work on the Avalon album he did with Roxy Music, but was not sure how Dylan's songs would hold up with his voice and music arrangement. Not to worry. He does a great job and this treatment of Dylan's music is faithful to the original with his own personality and arranging skill at play. Very nice job.

5.0 out of 5 stars bryan ferry iedito
