Editorial Reviews
Product Description
This fractured post-punk, post-hip-hop, post-pop album is the much-anticipated follow-up to their debut, I AM THE FUN BLAME MONSTER.
Amazon.com
On their third album, Portland, Oregon's Menomena (remember Sesame Street and the Piero Umaliani song, "Mah Na Mah Na"?) sound like Spoon on the brink of outer space with Mercury Rev riding in their rocketship. They write collectively, using software they scripted to assemble songs from their own click-tracks and melody snippets--and then re-learn as new, full-bodied entities. The cumulative effect is often collage-like, with piano and scratchy guitar and drums (and an occasional saxophone) dropping in and out as songs clamber forward, fueled by manic creative immediacy. They know how to throw down, too, thick guitars powering "The Pelican" but never overpowering the unlikely melodicism and irresistible lyricism of a fragile beauty like "Rotten Hell." --Andrew Bartlett

- Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2007This album is awesome! I found it wondering around the music section of this site. I heard some samples and was intrigued. When I got, I was instantly hooked. Love that bari sax. Love the way they put a song together. It seems like the percussion was recorded in a different place, at a different time, then they brought it to this other studio where the rest of the band was recording and found out it matched up pretty well. I've made all my close friends listen to this. I do hope it doesn't catch on too much. We don't need a bunch of squares taking this up.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2020I recommend this album to everyone interested in rock and roll during '00s. The band's best album and a stunner and fun for sure.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2007What a lovely and shocking listen this is! The first three songs are like nothing I've ever heard. The press sheet makes some comment about 'sounds of the northwest... filtered through a chicago post-rock lense,' and goes a good way to describing the sound.
Anyway, fractured rhythms and harmonies that but up against each other, subdued melancholy giving way to betrayed outrage and back again, all I can really say is that this is a truly beautiful record.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2018This is just a fantastic album from start to finish. an amazing full body of sound, thoughtful lyrics and the album art is the best i've ever seen.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2017Got what I paid for and it was shipped quickly and arrived before I expected it even. Great product, Thank you.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2008I've listened to this CD at least five times now and it just isn't sticking. I understand what they are trying to do, but it did not work for me. It just feels awkward. I am fine with music being somewhat experimental, but there still needs to be some sort of flow to the end product and if anything, this feels artificial, forced, and choppy. It doesn't have to be this way. Albums like All Hour Cymbals and Person Pitch demonstrate that modern music can be experimental, unique, and have a fantastic flow to them. I recommend that they spend less time on the computer and more time jamming.
It isn't like I hate the album, but there isn't anything that brings me back to it either. The lyrics are inconsequential and I don't recall anything memorable about the tunes. That leaves the sonics and, well, it just isn't enough.
One cool thing about this CD is the cover artwork, the best I have seen in a few years. There are physical holes in the paper, allowing you to rotate or fold the insert differently revealing changes in the visual. For that itself, I am glad I purchased the physical CD, even though the music disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Glad I did because they're fantastic
Only heard of this group because of a review in a Hifi magazine. Glad I did because they're fantastic. Bought a couple of their CDs even though I have a streaming subscription. Artists this good need to be supported and I knew I'd want the originals in my collection permanently.
