Product Description

Recorded over time in James Mercer's basement studio, Phil Ek's Seattle digs, and in Oregon City with veteran engineer Joe Chiccarelli (Beck, U2) - Wincing the Night Away is a Whole new animal. It's is the sound of a band growing up and out. Mercer's infectious, indelible melodic style is still at the core, and unfaltering. But anything can happen around it - and in this case, it does. Channeling a Morrissey vibe, 'Sea Legs' pairs a hip-hop (yes, hip-hop) beat with lush melodic lines and searing guitars. Elsewhere the band toys with tweaked-out piano steeped in psychedelic strings ('Red Rabbit'); fractured synth samples ('Silt Needles')' gauzy, arpeggiated keyboards cloaking thunderous anthems (Sleeping Lessons')' and, taking cues from early Jesus and Mary Chain albums - Seeping, fuzztoned epics ('Phantom Limb'). Finally, 'Turn on Me, ' 'Girl Sailor' and 'Australia' are the lilting, exhilarating, rollicking, rock-solid pop songs we've all come to covet from The Shins.

Review

(James) Mercer is a great songwriter, crafting classic pop-rock melodies that leap across octaves and twist in unexpected directions. - (Jody Rosen) -- Entertainment Weekly

...a quietly ambitious effort that nudges the Shins' trademark indie pop into unexpected new directions. - (JC) --
Billboard

..a bit more warm-blooded than the first two, full of characters trying to decide between trying anew or giving up. - (Kelefa Sanneh) --
The New York Times

So many brilliant songs. A few stinkers. A Comet Appears is a masterpiece.

Man oh man, it's very rare that an album comes along and when you hear, you fall in love with nearly every song on it.

This is one of those albums.

Starting beautifully with "Sleeping Lessons", a song about the writer's dealing with his insomnia, the introduction sets the pace for the entire album beautifully, with a nice soft tempo that gradually builds to a stronger rock melody that everyone can enjoy.

Most people tend to say that "Australia" is the best song on the album and I don't know to agree with them or not, but I will say that it is an AMAZING song. Between the "la-la-la's" and catchy lyrics this song is guaranteed to put a smile on your face if not make you want to dance.

"Pam Berry" is more of a transition than an actual song but it's a good transition none the less with some rather interesting ghostly echoing effects.

"Sea Legs" is probably the closest to hip-hop that The Shins have ever dared to get. It's got a really catchy beat and carries itself well. Definitely one of my favorites.

I could go on and on but I won't. It's just a great album and you should buy it, seriously.

    And for 9.99.

C'mon! What are you waiting for?!

I received the album today and have just listened to it once while painting in my basement around 9:30 on a Monday night. I am in no position or mood to compare it to the first two albums in technical, thematic, lyrical, or productional terms. I can say that, based on the first listen, it was everything I expected and wanted from The Shins and more (even after reading the gunshy RS and hesitant Pitchfork reviews). It was very good to paint to. I floated along, letting the melodies, textures, and James Mercer's voice put a smile on my face and a nod to my head as I painted along.

I gave it 5 stars because I love The Shins and this album, plain and simple. I suppose tomorrow I could listen to it again, reading the lyrics and analizing each song and find some flaws. Oh Inverted World and CTN aren't perfect either. I'm just happy that in my opinion, they did it again; made an album that I can't wait to hear again and will listen to alot for a long time (my experience with the first two).

I first heard of The Shins a few years ago and really liked their songs "New Slang" and also "Kissing the Lipless". At that time I thought they were a great little indie band working hard to keep their art rock alive and well.

I anticipated the arrival of "Wincing The Night Away" after hearing the enormously catchy single "Phantom Limb" a few months ago. I noticed right away that The Shins were brewing something new and slightly departing from their earlier alt-country/alt-rock low-fi indie brilliance to a more progressive and developed soundscape and song structure.

I will tell you that the new Shins album has met and exceeded my highest expectations. They've channeled The Smiths and some other early 80's new wave sounds into their quirky modern indie rock spirit to create what is, in my humble opinion, a sheer masterpiece.

This album is epic. "Sea Legs" and "Red Rabbits" alone make the purchase of this album worth it, but every song is also great. I bought the vinyl record of this album too.

If you buy this album expecting a repeat of "Oh, Inverted World," then you're probably going to be let down. Of course, if you have "Chutes Too Narrow," then you should already know that the Shins aren't content to sit on their laurels and that their sound is continuously evolving.

All three of the Shins albums have their roots firmly planted in the late sixties psychedelics of the Beach Boys, Byrds, and Beatles, but the focus changes slightly from album to album. "Wincing the Night Away" seems to find the Shins between styles. It's the most experimental of their albums, and while they've certainly created a few more pop gems ("Phantom Limbs" will be one of the best songs of 2007), there are also a couple of tracks that just don't seem to fit ("Sea Legs" and "Red Rabbits" to name a couple.) You can't condemn a band for wanting to experiment, but it derails the albums just a bit--this one just doesn't have the cohesive feel of their earlier efforts. Of course, if you're just a person looking for a few singles to put on your MP3 player, then by all means there are some great ones here. The first three songs and the last 3 songs of the album are all outstanding.

I can't say enough about this album. I've been listening to it nonstop over the past month and it seems to get better with every consecutive listen. I bought it on Vinyl as well as I'm a bog vinyl junky. The lyrics are sophisticated. The production is stellar. The music is upbeat and yet very soothing. It's a ten. Across the board one of the best albums of the year in my opinion. I can't say enough. I have "liked" past Shins albums, however, this album is a little different. Overall, it seems the arrangement of the songs is more dynamic. It seemed to me on past Shins albums that some of the songs were a bit mundane and lacked real punch. Here the songwriting really stands out. This album is, in other words, "well crafted". I can't say enough good things about this.
