Product Description
Throughout his storied career, which began with 1994's classic Illmatic and has spanned the last decade with over 12 million albums sold, Nas has been more than just the genre's foremost lyricist and thinker. He has become a statesman, some would argue hip-hop's "conscience." Now, with the release of his long-awaited Def Jam debut--the aptly-titled Hip-Hop Is Dead--Nas returns to his role as mentor and teacher, his legendary mic skills as sharp as ever, and takes today's young rappers back to school. The lesson? Hip-Hop--as Nas sees it--is very much alive.

Given its provocative title, it's no surprise that parts of Hip Hop Is Dead feel like an elegy of sorts. Nas practically came into the game looking backwards (see "Memory Lane" off Illmatic) but he seems more nostalgic than ever with tracks like "Where Are They Now?," "Carry on Tradition," "Can't Forget About You," and the title song which all focus on rap's past. This reminiscing can only fan the dim candle fans keep lit for Nas, hopeful that he'll make a full return to his former glory. But, once again, the rapper teases and falls short. As has become habit, Nas does manage to knock out a handful of excellent songs ("Can't Forget" and "Play on Playa" for example), along with a handful of awful fare (none worse than "Who Killed It," Nas's disastrous attempt to channel the spirit of '30s gangster actor Edward G. Robinson), and a few forgettable filler songs. The production is similarly uneven though Kanye West's and Will.I.Am's contributions are reliably listenable. The biggest shortcoming is that given it's title Hip Hop Is Dead aspires to be an event album but it never delivers on that promise despite the heady symbolism of former rival Jay-Z joining him on "Black Republicans." In the end, this is another good, not great album. Hip-hop isn't dead and neither is Nas but both could use a shot of life. --Oliver Wang

- Reviewed in the United States on December 21, 2006It's amazing how Nas continues to generate a unique album. It seems he goes against the everyday thing (Well of course, Hip Hop is dead) and pulls it off pretty well. I'm sure alot of people won't like this album because It's "No Illmatic" but it certainly has quite a few gems, and no song is real bad in particular that I can recall. If your a fan of Nas you can't go wrong, but if you weren't a fan of Nas before, this won't change here. While this isn't a perfect album compared to the rest of the work Nas has put out in the past, It's pretty much 99% better then half the crap being release today. Hip Hop is truly dead.
My favorite's
Hold Down The Block
Who Killed It
Carry On Tradition
Hustlers
Not Going Back
The rest are good but those are my standouts. It's all about content.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2013This album is slept on. Nas came up with a concept and executed it will. Hip Hop is dead but if you truly don't understand that quote then you will not enjoy this album for what it is. The intro is exciting and draws you into the album and it only gets better from there. The track who killed it is definitely the weakest track on here. I like the concept but the song is ehhhh lol. Standout tracks are carry on tradition, hold down the block, black republican and many more. Much better album than streets disciple and I actually enjoyed streets disciple.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 9, 2011Once again, Nas proves why he is one of the greatest hip hop artists of all time. He took a bold direction and made a strong stand. He has never been afraid to take a new direction or make strong declarations. He is one of the few TRUE artists out. He loves hip hop and is true to hip hop. He is not caught up in just "money" and "ho's" and cars and clothes etc... He still represents the true essence of hip hop which is self expression.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 16, 2011Nas touched a nerve in certain rappers. He was speaking how hiphop is now and how it's dying it changed from the boom bap era. This album is great it's a must buy great lyrics beats production and he keeps it real
Top 5 tracks:

- Reviewed in the United States on June 11, 2014The CD is great but the track Hip Hop is Dead (which is why I purchased it) is Phenomenol! Plus it is the track in the movie The Departed and that is in my top three :)
- Reviewed in the United States on March 14, 2007I just bought this CD, and I have the explicit version, but the song Hip Hop is dead is edited. Is it like that on everyone's CD? All my other songs are explicit except that one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Starkes Rap-Album!
