Ahead of his new album, LA-based musician and Driftless Recordings co-founder Patrick McDermott (aka North Americans) self-imposed simple parameters: no more than two guitars and a synthesizer drone. That restraint, coupled with a trip to Idaho's remote Sawtooth wilderness, yields his most organic work to date, rolling instrumentals which nod gently to American Primitive with an oddball spirit. He finished Going Steady back home, welcoming synth lines from neighbor Julianna Barwick, guitar and whistles from Dylan Baldi (Cloud Nothings), and additional accents from Hayden Pedigo, Joel Williams, and Meg Duffy (Hand Habits, Kevin Morby).
