Perfume Genius
Over the course of two albums, Perfume Genius, aka Seattle native Mike Hadreas, cemented his place as a singer-songwriter of rare frankness, creating songs that, while achingly emotional, offered empathy and hope, rather than any judgment or handwringing. Sparse, gorgeous and with Hadreas’ quavering vocals often only accompanied by piano, they were uncommonly beautiful tales of a life lived on the dark side – scarred, brutalised, yet ultimately, slowly but surely reclaimed.

Lydia Ainsworth
Lydia Ainsworth’s pop experiments sound like they’re made for big screens. Close your eyes while listening to her recent debut, Right From Real, and the considerable power of her orchestral strings, horns, and dense, wordless harmonies transports you to a dark cinema, where surreal images tumble like falling skies, and it’s not quite clear what comes next.

French for “I think of none other,” New York’s enigmatic Arthur Ashin, also known as Autre Ne Veut, makes music that falls somewhere between ’80s R&B hooks and melodies, and the blurry sounds of Ariel Pink. Me plays out like diary entries from one woman’s voice musing on the personal, the political, and all the middle ground between.

The Range
Recording as The Range, James Hinton made the computer his primary instrument after falling under the spell of Baltimore club, bringing in his broader sonic influences from early ‘90s jungle, early ‘00s grime and mid ‘00s electronica to a new sonic whole. The software was the thing at home, but what excited the young producer was the network, and where he spiraled was YouTube. His album Potential uses as its backbone a series of vocal samples that Hinton has found in the forgotten corners of the site.

Sonny Moore found club and mainstream stardom beginning in 2008, when he swapped his gig as the frontman in post-hardcore band From First to Last for the dancefloor-oriented project Skrillex. If topping the club charts didn’t prove the producer had arrived, a trio of Grammy Awards in 2011 helped considerably. He also collaborated with the surviving members of the Doors on a single called “Breakin’ a Sweat, ” which won two more Grammy Awards. In 2015, he collaborated with Diplo for the album Skrillex and Diplo Present Jack Ü.

Tortoise
Simply put, Tortoise has spent nearly 25 years making music that defies description. While the Chicago-based instrumental quintet has nodded to dub, rock, jazz, electronica and minimalism throughout its revered and influential six-album discography, the resulting sounds have always been distinctly, even stubbornly, their own. The deeply intuitive interplay between the group members could come only from two decades of experimentation, revision and improvisation.

Moses Sumney
Moses Sumney has emerged in the past year as an independent artist to watch, riding a wave of word-of-mouth praise based on hushed recordings and dynamic live performances. Raised between Southern California and Ghana, he was so shy growing up that he would write songs avidly but hide them inside his mattress. After moving to Los Angeles to attend UCLA at age 20, he taught himself to play the guitar and gingerly started performing on campus, writing soul-infused folk tunes using guitar and layered arrangements built on loop pedals.
