For over a decade now, Japanese musician Shugo Tokumaru has crafted highly imaginative and playful music, songs that simply sound like they were fun to make. On TOSS, his first LP since 2012, Tokumaru introduces collaboration to the process, welcoming members of his live band, an orchestra, Maywa Denki, Deerhoof drummer Greg Saunier, and other friends to come improvise with an array of elementary instruments. What began as experimental recording sessions evolved into colorful source material which Tokumaru cut into fragments and arranged as new phrases. The result is a giddy and exploratory collection that, per Pitchfork, "pushes his pop to mature, without losing that wide-eyed innocence." Out on Polyvinyl.
