The eerie, poetic music of LA-based duo Annabel (lee) defies easy categorization. They swirl elements of jazz, bossa nova, folk and spoken word into commanding soundscapes, as if to summon the spirit of their namesake (Edgar Allen Poe). The Cleansing, the follow-up to their 2015 debut (released by Ninja Tune), continues down the winding path of its predecessor with a certain duality. Side A, Shades of Reverie, juxtaposes acoustic guitar with hopeful lyrical abstraction, while Side B, Tones of Clarity, gives way to dramatic orchestration. It's out on Brooklyn label Youngbloods.
